Thread regarding Lumen Technologies layoffs

A while ago somebody mentioned September layoffs

Was that just a rumor that was proven wrong or is there still a chance of it happening?

@2at
have been told pretty much the same thing. The company will eat the fines. They dont care. The cost is worth it to get rid of the customers. Now i need to go burn on this lead to get mrs g. back in service again this month. Shes had her phone number for 52 years and is the last one left in a 50. I think im upto 16 cracks in that cable now. 17 coming soon

@2a1 I’ll tell you what my 1st level cable boss said. We don’t care about puc complaints. Continue to fix, use best of worst and l net process. No digging encaps. No overtime. Lumen does not care about outages, cut cables or any other service affecting things. C .O conversion and cable mining are priorities. March 2029. Iykyk. 🪦

@285

I need someone from Lumen to explain to me how we are still getting fu---d sideways on PUC and FCC complaints, then. If they can decommission, why are we still getting lawyers involved? We will never catch up in our cable team with the amount of tickets we have.

@1rk The FCC is mandating the decommission, which is why they removed restrictions that slowed jt down. Straight from them: To ensure that every American can benefit from enhanced service offerings made
possible by network modernization, the FCC is cutting the red tape that prevented
providers from upgrading their networks by replacing aging copper lines with modern
infrastructure.

@1w1 That’s down to 90 days and the FCC eliminated the states challenge option. Why would they spend money on tools or hire people when they should be shutdown by 2029. Many people have already been given their notices to find another provider or will disconnect in 90 days. The FCC eliminated most barriers and shortened the one notice. The FCC auto approves the decommission notice in 30 days. No reviewing price for life, T1’s or even elevator and fire alarm lines. That is up to the business owner to prepare for. The FCC sho

What Is Happening at Lumen?
Lumen is not being coy about direction; the direction is in the filings. The pattern over the last 15 months:
June 1, 2025
CenturyLink (d/b/a Lumen) grandfathers Private Line services in state filings: no new orders, no renewals
January 30, 2026
Level 3 Telecom grandfathers 40+ voice services, including basic business lines, across all 50 states and
D.C.
February 2, 2026
AT&T completes its $5.75 billion purchase of Lumen's Mass Markets fiber business (1 million subscribers,
4 million locations)
August 1, 2026
Partners can no longer sell or renew Lumen voice offerings; expiring contracts move to month-to-month, per Channel Dive
Read those four rows together and the strategy is plain: Lumen is exiting the business of selling you phone lines. Its notices direct customers to their account teams to discuss alternatives, and its published migration paths point at cloud voice and SIP. None of the successor services documented in those notices is a like-for-like analog line.
For most office phones, cloud voice is a fine answer. The problem is everything in your building that is not an office phone.

@1v3 CenturyLink and Lumen business customers are now on three clocks at once. Voice contracts stopped renewing, the FCC's Network and Services Modernization Order (FCC-26-19A1, adopted March 26, 2026) lets any carrier grandfather a legacy line with nothing more than a customer notice, and a full retirement filing now auto-grants in 31 days. Meanwhile the U.S. copper base has collapsed from 171 million PSTN lines in 2005 to 11.7 million in 2024, per TeleGeography. A grandfathered line is not a stable line. It is a line in runoff.

Depending on the state, you absolutely can LNET a cable with workers. FCC requires 6 months notice, that is all.

@1s0

Then you’re a sh---y cable tech, guarantee I’ve been doing it longer than you have. If a cable has active workers you cannot LNET the cable on a whim. You have to check for T1 circuits, price for life customers, etc. what you’re doing is aiding the company is doing illegal sh-t. You’re time will come.

@1rk hey d-mb fu-k. I’m a cable tech. We l net every day. Use the spark app. If it meets the criteria it gets l netted. Look at the workers in forte. Obviously you know nothing about field work.

@1pd

Cable is even more backlogged than I&R a--hole. You cannot send a cable to LNET with active workers; that is EXACTLY how you end up with more FCC complaints inserted into your colon and is one of the many reasons why Lumen is drowning. Eventually, you pi-s off the wrong customer and they end up working for the Attorney General, a police department, a federal agency, etc.

@OP, I wouldn’t call it a rumor. I’d call it a tentative appointment on LUMN’s monthly layoff calendar.

@1mg what part of the company doesn’t care do you not understand. Put them on best of worst,kick it to cable and let them get l netted. It’s not that hard. Do your 8 hrs and go home.

@1j7

I'd love to. But when management refuses to hire more staff, purchase tools, spend money to maintain their fleet, etc - we can't exactly take care of the customers. On any given day we are backlogged by over 2,000 tickets in the field.

@1kf pic complaints don’t matter anymore. I get 1 day. Close them out. Move on.

How about complaining to the puc instead of coming to a layoff forum where the people you expect to be taking care of you are discussing getting laid off?

@1j7 1. Check your spelling (her/here).

  1. How do I take care of my customers when I've been RIF'd? Dork.
  2. Call Katie, thanks to AI, she and her 'A' team have gobs of time to listen to you whine.

If the sun rises LUMN is having layoffs. It has happened every month for the past quarter century. Revenues keep declining so the only options are: 1) layoffs or 2) refinance the debt,

Layoffs are fair game every month at Lumen it’s our North Star to vanish and our leaders took the dare literally, on dare to lead and didn’t lead

It’s obvious leadership and their buddies looting Lumen till its demise. Our products su-k and most of it we sell third party services to get a deal

@OP It's still August, so yes another round of RIF's in September is possible and more in the remaining months of 2026. Lot's of holidays to ruin or derail. That's the Lumen way.

There is ALWAYS a chance of it happening. Work your OT, pad your bank account and be prepared to start job searching. It's not a matter of "if", it's when.

@OP if you’re depending on this web site for information you have issues. Layoffs are and will always keep happening until this sh-t hole is bankrupt, sold off or both.
