I’ve witnessed countless surplus’s and layoffs in my 38 years

As a Communications technician in Missouri, I’ve witnessed countless surplus’s and layoffs in my 38 years being at risk many times myself but fortunate enough not to fall victim. Having said that the biggest threat to all of us is and has always been evolving technologies that eliminate our tasks at work making the need for us diminished.

Having no where to transfer to or them moving jobs to central huge mega locations in one state doesn’t help. The companies goal is to have as few “boots on the ground with paychecks” and that’s not just techs but ALL positions including office personnel. It’s never going to get better, just worse.

@ZzXYgDZ-xqy Problem is there will be no incentive to leave until you are 65 years old for Medicare, since they take away the medical benefits. By then you could have 45 years in, not 38. Not to mention full Social Security for many won't kick in until 67 years old, since they take away the pension benefits. Might as well hold out for the 70 year age for max SS benefits. So, you are talking maybe 50 years with the company by then. I say after 50 years of service you're being greedy, but hey, why not be a little greedy, you're 70 after all, you've earned it!

Don't worry my friend, AT&T has a plan to replace you too. Probably with an Indian with a sketchy degree in IT, or maybe someone in the Philippines if you "support" the network.

Then again you might not fall into either of these categories, you might be in retail mobile phone sales, or you might be "management" trying so hard, so hard to cling your job because you know your next gig is with Uber when AT&T is done with you.

Pro tip: I hear Uber pays better if you have a newer model black car. Good luck sport.

@ZzXYgDZ-xqy. For example, 18+38=56. Would you retire at 56? You may still have kids in college. I know 38 years seems like a lot, probably more than you’ve been alive, but it isn’t nearly enough service for many of us. I hope your life turns out exactly like you have it planned but the unexpected will always happen. You don’t know anything about the OP.

Evolving technology. I have seen surpluses follow intense rehab, whether from storms or the old roving Cable crews. One came to a area I worked in and replaced or repaired a lot of the old Cable, the old aerial drops, protectors, etc. Work dried up. Smaller area but we lost 20% of the techs. Work goes away, so do techs. Always been that way.

38 years..... leave already
