Totally agree landline is just a nickname given to switch fed pots.

@ywh...I'm from the South. I call a drink a Coke(although RC is my brand of choice). I work special circuits in the WIRELINE network. I I&M T1's , Ds0, dry pair point to points, CLEC dial tones on copper cables , and I I&M ASE, DS3, Video, and a lot of other services on fiber cables and they are all part of the WIRELINE network. There is no such thing as a landline network since the 1st nonpots service was put in a copper cable back in the 60s/70s.

{Landline has a specific meaning. It refers to telephony that operates on the archaic PSTN. If you have a home phone as part of your bundle, there is a 99.999% chance that it does not operate on a landline connection. It is most likely a VoIP connection through your internet modem. Landline would be a sub-category of the much broader term WIRELINE. Landline probably accounts for less than 1% off all things wireline executed by this company.

My guess would be that there are less than 1000 employees who's work involves maintaining anything left of the landline network, which is an extremely generous estimate.

Anyone who does not know the technical difference between Wireline and Landline and who uses the two terms interchangeably needs to be on the next surplus list.

And you would be wrong about Voip, and looking for a job soon.

you have no idea how much wire & fiber it takes to put all our various tv products on the map. we are part of "landline" too

I just have to shake my head at the id--ts that say "Get rid of Landline." When I see those posts, I see a lot of people that AT&T can get rid of (and should) because they don't have a clue how the network works. Sorry, but you haven't a clue and you don't even know what you don't know.

5G CRAN, fiber connectivity to LTE cell towers, IPAG that connects to entire network together, Emux that gives customers access to the IPAG and all the fiber interconnections.

Guess where all of this happens.
