Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

June VSP unemployment

I’m a MA VSPer later this month. I live in MA and was wondering if any people know if unemployment is approved ? I’ve heard of several people that did get it but mainly because they were released before June and were not given a choice on release date. I’ve heard some have gotten it and some haven’t. Not sure if it is worth the bother of filing

I love some of the knuckleheads on here. Just because you left and took a severance doesn't mean you would not get unemployment. You signed a release of claims against Verizon in taking the VSP, so MA allows you to collect in such circumstances. Educate yourself before you post next time.

In Massachusetts, the unemployment insurance is not taxpayer funded. The funds come from the employer.

In MA, everything is very simple.

In MA rule is very simple. If severance payment is conditional on you signing an agreement with the company then you are eligible for UI (unemployment insurance). Since you sign a termination agreement with VZ to not sue them etc to get the package you are eligible. No exceptions.

@ZydLUEj-2ahl Depends on state. here in NJ, you get unemployment even if you get severance. Only reason you are not eligible is if they pay you for 6 months on a ongoing basis.

VSP is a different animal since its voluntary. I would think you are not eligible but the laws are complex

I'm currently working on my undergrad in HR, and had this very same question when I was in one of my classes (fantastic timing).

It was explained to me that, since we are receiving the pay-out, they are essentially paying us "forward" an amount of income (xx weeks/year of service). This is in replacement of unemployment. If you are unable to find work by the end of that (xx weeks/year of service) period, you may apply for unemployment.

If we had been laid off, no VSP, no severance (or a minimal one), then yes, filing for unemployment and actually receiving it would be more successful. However, under the circumstances, being denied unemployment is extremely likely.

Verizon never shows up for appeals so chances are they default so you win

You voluntarily left the company, you were not fired or laid off, you should be denied, you received a generous severance package, you do not deserve free money. You have received more than most of us. Move on.

I was denied and filed an appeal. More to come.

Unemployment? Give me a break, you were a load on the company and now you want to be a load on the taxpayers. What a loser looking for another handout.

Def worth applying. You will be approved. All of us VSP folks have been approved in Mass.
