Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Hey op, when it’s it’s time. Hopefully your house is almost paid off. Sounds like your wife is in good position, you’ll be ok. We all thought same when we came onboard, that we’d be here forever like those before us. This place isn’t worth the stress.

38 years that’s great, I’ve been zigging and zagging for 20 years - 3 surpluses - 4 reductions. They are dialing in that target every year, there’s less lambs to go around. Like most I’ll ride this pony as long as I can.

As a Communications technician in Missouri, I’ve witnessed countless surplus’s and layoffs in my 38 years being at risk many times myself but fortunate enough not to fall victim. Having said that the biggest threat to all of us is and has always been evolving technologies that eliminate our tasks at work making the need for us diminished. Having no where to transfer to or them moving jobs to central huge mega locations in one state doesn’t help. The companies goal is to have as few “boots on the ground with paychecks” and that’s not just techs but ALL positions including office personnel. It’s never going to get better, just worse.

OP, your service to our country is deeply appreciated. I’m just a few years older and expect to be RIF’d but we’ll see.

Having said all that, to take a brutally honest approach .....T’s choice to deal with the “tax cut,” as they wish is a business decision and if I get a tax refund from Uncle Sam I don’t want a phone call from HR telling me how I should be investing it, none of us would.

It would have been nice, even a great PR stunt that T could have used too their advantage, to show how their tax benefit could have been used for us but they chose not too....an opportunity lost.

It's a shame life is so expensive in that great bastion of a socialistic sanctuary City, you would think everything there would be free.

I am amazed at the talk about how companies receive tax Windfall form Tax reform. No company receive anything, the paid less taxes. Do you receive a windfall when gas price falls? You are being brainwashed by the left. I am so amazed at how economically ignorant most people are. Thats why the democrats control CA and other states that are becoming sh--holes. Dude don’t blame ATT for the cost of SF, blame you id--tic fellow CA voters that vote communists in place that have destroyed great cities like LA and SF resulting in huge homeless problems and higher housing costs. The solution is to lift all those restrictions on housing construction and let the free market force prices down.

Bay area has lots of homeless shelters you can stay in through the week then head home on the weekend.

I know traveling electricians from the east coast, living in campers around the bay area. They built the Apple spaceship and now moved on to the new Google project. It's what people do to survive. I wish for you nothing but the best in the future.

I was about to say.....You were in an entry level craft job supporting a single product (U-Verse) with a defined life cycle. We’re you not able to test qualify for any other positions besides Premise Technician? Has their not been a single job posting/vacancy this year in the Sacramento area with AT&T that you were qualified for? Considering your experience, can you not find a job with another employer in the same field?

It's mind-boggling they paid out for this long. It has nothing to do with tax cuts. Companies don't give away money any more than you would give away money to the company. Easy to blame companies for moving to cheap labor, while we all rush to Walmart & internet discounters to buy the overseas products to undercut American producers. You reap what you sow. That's not a "threat" made to your job, that's just what happened.

It sounds to me like the laid off person should get another job in Sacramento. Is the job market bad anywhere? Prem Tech was a Uverse deployment title. Consider it deployed. Government mandated fiber buildouts have completed.

We are using the money to pay the dividend to the shareholder and bonuses to the select group of employees. Some money will be invested as well. No need to go to Congress, I can help with this...

Our union, the Communications Workers of America, has been urging Congress to investigate how AT&T has been using its tax windfall since the company has yet to provide any real answers that add up. AT&T needs to explain its broken promises to those of us who’ve already lost our jobs and workers who worry their jobs will be the next one to go.

You have been brainwashed by union propaganda. Job cuts are the result of Randall running the company into the ground, not the result of tax cuts.
