Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Laid off after a raise?

I ran into a former coworker the other day and as we chatted he mentioned his pink slip came a few months after he got a raise. Can this be true? Is it usual at AT&T for people to be shown the door just after they've received a raise?

If it's true, seems unnecessarily cruel to me. Why lull people into a false sense of security just to knock them down in a month or two?

What makes you think the left and right hand at AT&T actually know what they are doing and that raises/promotions and layoffs are coordinated across HR and local management? Look, I was an Executive Director before I retired. Raises and promotions were handled at the VP level and you managed these locally. Then you get a random call from Dallas that says "hey we've got to cut your budget by X dollars to make the numbers this quarter so you have to go down Y headcount and just make it work". This is how it really works, and this is why you get situations as the author of this post describes.

Hire a attorney, it’s generally bad faith to get laid off especially if you participated in a Protected area like work place investigation or fmla. Good luck. Sincerely - The Man

Yes I have seen the “move across the country” shtick too. Several folks were cut 2-3 months AFTER uprooting their entire lives for this sh@$hole company. That seems to me like that should be eligible for a lawsuit.

Layoffs happen after a raise because lower management sponsors the raise while leadership simply cuts with no respect to the value of the employee. Leadership acts blindly tot he org and mandates the number. This company is not looking to grow it's employee base. You has to hang on for as long as possible.

I’ve seen people relocate from NJ to Texas, only to be laid off a month later. That’s just deplorable.

Good idea. They should stop giving our raises to prevent people from getting offended. You get a raise based on working the previous year. Since when are raises predictions of the future? By your logic, if they are going to get rid of someone, they should just cut their wages in half and work them til they quit.

I’ve seen techs called back from out of state to be surplused.

Seen techs go to training a week before their surplus date.

They are too big to notice or care.

Yup, happened to me. Got a great review, a raise... Then the boot on 3/29.

Nobody is safe. Well, some seem to be.

Yep. I received a glowing review and a great raise. Two weeks later, I was surplussed. I'd like to think my boss didn't know yet while he was telling me he was looking forward to having me on the team in 2019, but I have a feeling he did.

You have obviously not worked here long enough to know that the death star does not give a F$&&@. I have seen guys get layoff weeks after a promotion, on their days off, while on vacation, one guy was in his mothers wake and he got fired during it.. Nothing and i mean nothing should surprise you when dealing with this company, they just don't give a Fk..
