Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

When the IPTV project got axed...

...the writing was on the wall for FiOS.

Most of the infrastructure is still built around GPON and HFC/QAM for video and STBs.

Folks are cord cutting now and soon video customers will be scarce.

From a financial standpoint it makes no sense to spend 100s or 1000s of dollars to install/maintain a FiOS sub, when you can just Fedex them a 5G cantenna/modem and call it a day.

Ask Comcast about cord cutting; they seem to be doing well. Verizon has lost a boat load of customer to the cable companys, companys that have a wired connection to the house. Plus the Comcast offers WIFI nationally.

On top of that we have two other local but moderately large companies offering wireless, dialtone and yes...fiber to the house. They are also taking fiber into Verizon franchise area and offering fiber to the Verizon customers. These are companies that have a sales force that is going out to Verizon customers and taking the cream of the crop. And Verizon is letting them do it.

Verizon has gone out of its way to rid themselves of residential customers and wire to the house. Other companies have picked them up and are making revenue from it. A good number of those residential customers are also business owners or people who make purchasing decisions for business and local governments. Certainly Verizon have given up hundreds of millions of revenue just to prove there is competition.

IPTV was a bust and we all knew it from the start. No engineer should ever be allowed to run a company such as Verizon. Verizon would have been much better to roll out the fiber to the prem and switch customer dialtone and internet to that fiber.

Lets factor in the off shore tech support ( if you dare to call it that ) and other call centers. I know Verizon customers that have left simply from dealing with those off shore centers. They are dropping their DSL and dial tone and going to Comcast. Comcast...a company that still has wire to the customer. Go figure.

IoT is so insecure that no one in there proper mind would use it. Verizon banking on IoT at this point is senseless. 5G and the city of the future. Only if that city has no trees and in the yards, avenues and streets. Would spend billions on putting antennas on every high rise than then putting the wired NID in every apartment, unit, office, etc.

It is just a shame Verizon has not had a CEO that actually understood the business and market. Now they have one whose only purpose is to disassemble the company.

Why Verizon thought they could make that work, when Intel couldn't is beyond me. The same with Yahoo and AOL. Total waste of money. Should have used that money for Fios build, since 5g is still a work in progress and probably won't be viable for quite some time. Video or not, it would be easy to sell FiOS internet and a cheap phone line to everyone. And they would have the fiber available to build out their 5g.

Made no sense to do an IPTV project if it was not going to be a nationally rolled out product like Sling TV, Direct TV now, Vue, etc.

People in this company seem to forget that the consumer wireline coverage is just a negligible. Literally....Fios revenue could be a rounding error when compared to rest of the company.
