Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This is a vicious cycle because of finance

Same concept as our contract with IBM development. If work slows down, IBM fires the programmers that worked on the project for years. All the knowledge walks out the door. When more work comes in, they hire off the street and its back to square one. This is a vicious cycle because of finance. IBM then charges the projects to get their new developers "up to speed". Project in 2Q starts to bleed funding. 3-4Q project looses funding. IBM fires developers... starts again the next year. Its no wonder TechDev cannot get anything done -- on time and under budget (with any quality)

Yeah - finance is the biggest problem why t can't do cloud or agile either.

gee - there is an accountant as the CEO you would think they would have it nailed. doesn't figure does it.

There woukd be less churn if Finance had modernized to SAFe with Tech Dev but let's face it, there's no way they would have jobs if they couldn't constantly jerk everyone around on funding.

Yes. I have seen this many many times trying to work with the IBM newbies in India who unfortunately are clueless and trying to get up to speed with minimal training while IBM has laid off the U.S. T3 and Dev who built the systems and are the subject matter experts....projects suffer due to reqts and code quality and budget runs out as it can not sustain the months after months testing and recovering the from bad code quality.....and millions down the drain....IBM has a pretty good contract as do other vendors as we pay them to fix their mistakes...over and over and over again...It is not just IBM as have seen the same with Accenture, Amdocs, vendor testers who drag out the testing......Now AT&T is hiring developers to work for T in India and I am certain it will be no different...….

One big problem being that this time, after AT&T overshoots on their layoffs and needs to hire off the street, they're not going to have qualified, highly talented applicants.Word has gotten out what a lousy place to work this is. The best workers will be looking elsewhere for a job.

I noticed this with PIDs that finance would force us to put on hold (no doubt to meet a quarterly financial target) and then made active after that quarter passed. These PIDs would Cost 20-25% more adjusted for the sizes of the projects. That’s insanity.

Amen! This is the absolute truth. I’ll add that the recently hired off the street devs are for the most part awful. Most are straight out of school with 0 experience. Why is that? Because or rep has gotten so bad, folks with any experience are turning down working for T.
