AT&T along with the US has lost it's way. Just read the June 3, 2019 article on how Huawei is the leader in 5G technology worldwide. AT&T/Bell Labs/Western Electric used to be the world leader in telecom equipment. Thanks to government intervention back in the 80s and subsequent corporate mis-steps we aren't even in the game. We are now focusing our efforts on making "super-hero" movies. A sad situation for sure.

Funnily enough the direct modern successor to Bell Labs is actually Nokia and China-Huaxin, since Bell Labs became Lucent which was bought by Alcatel which was bought by Nokia in 2015, and Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise was sold to China-Huaxin in 2014. So if you want to say AT&T's R&D lost its way, you're really saying Nokia's Bell Labs subdivision lost its way. Nokia's tech is of course headquartered in Finland and largely produced by Foxconn Vietnam.
AT&T broke off from Lucent ages ago, and that company wasn't even today's AT&T, which is really Southwestern Bell/SBC. That's like saying what the heck happened to Motorola?! When it's since gotten bought out by Google then Lenovo, or what the heck happened to Nokia?! When it got bought by Microsoft then HMD Global. It's stupid.
