Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What is going on with retail being so slow?

Why are the retail stores slowed down so much? Hardly any foot traffic for hours sometimes. Is it like that everywhere in AT&T corporate stores?

Simple, do you go to AT&T to buy a phone ? Or to buy a new cable subscription? Whats that You say ? I have to buy a TV subscription when all I came here for was a new phone? You are going to make me listen to a pitch about TV? i don't have time for that, Ill go where they sell me a new phone with no attachments. It worked so well for AOL, what made the deciders think they'd be anymore successful?

In reality, retail is a slow death.

We are basically there to serve the base and sell DTV to. When we bought DTV, I asked, “Say we have a 80% plus saturation on TV in this area, what’s next?”

They already pay us $3 for cell upgrades, no one cares about those.

It’s harder TO SELL DTV in areas where HOAs, LOS, and weather are major concerns. (North FL) DTVNow is GARBAGE. To top that off there are 4 (un)Authorized Dealers, 9 National dealers, Online, and telesales to compete with.

The baby boomers that come in can barely use their flip phone. The ones that want smart phones are basically grenades. They aren’t confident enough in themselves to learn it or they’re entitled and you’ll answer all the millions of questions. If they come in when you have a customer, they want help now.

May and Sept are always the slowest months in retail.

San Diego isn't the only market acting like that. MNY is just as bad if not worse.

San Diego here! Our store is pretty slow also people who come in now are people paying their bill its the same people every month.. the reps fight all the time and the asm don't really do anything anymore except for ssr work sometimes and float around us waiting for us to mess up in our interactions AND DO NOT MISS THE DEMO EVERY SINGLE TIME. The promotions in the stores are not the best it's just the bogo when online have better promos. The customers are smart and want to avoid customer service or these days being offered 20 different products.. we've been told to ask for insurance 3 times... I've helped out at a few stores and word is most of the rsms are shady people on "power trips" which could be our market is hurting. I think the arsm could be more engaged in the stores with rsc's, asms and even the customers when realistically needed the reality is someone has to be a natural born leader to lead a team and many people in mgmt positions simply don't have what it takes to do the job leading us to if retail is at the of the rope we may as well go down with pride and say we tried our hardest and were failed on.

Guess the DTV has changed. Been awhile but the last couple of times I was in a store they never mentioned it.

I think a lot of customers are avoiding stores because they are so tired of DTV being shoved at them every time they walk in the door. When repeat customers walk back in, the first words out of their mouth is "don't try to sell me directv"

The IHX department offers better promos than COR does. Last I heard, IHX and mobile event teams are able to offer the 650.00 buyout if you switch from another carrier. COR can't.

Because I’m not going to spend almost $1000 on a phone! Our promos are basically 2 year contracts because they’re paid out over two years and requires a new line. How many lines do you think customers need?!

I think people have gotten smart about buying their phones and get them from the manufacturer directly and then shopping around for the plan that makes the most sense to them.

I hear ting.com is pretty good. I think people are looking for smaller companies that don't have so much overhead and additional fees that raises their prices

Keep hearing all of the great news about the new and improved 5G experience, don’t want to buy an out of date device. Gonna wait for that new 5G before spending a grand for a new phone. Keep advertising the wonders of 5G so more people will postpone and wait before taking out another mortgage for a phone

Maybe selling the OnePlus 7 Pro phone like T-Mobile would help.

Every so often there is a paradigm shift. Foot traffic everywhere is slowing, basically. In this era, things can be handled remotely just as efficiently. Plus, consumers aren’t upgrading every year anymore just because you drop a new phone. Why would I buy a new phone, when my current phone is perfectly fine?

That and most people will just place online

orders. Why bother going in?

If you only sell overpriced phones that don't do anything special, why would I go in your store? $1,000 for a phone that does the same thing as my old one is ridiculous. In fact, maybe this is what you meant when you said that you only wanted rich customers.

Pretty simple. No promotions, no deals, no foot traffic.
