Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Between 5g and new satellite internet tech , wireline is dead meat

Just a matter of time before wireline is completely not relevant. New high speed internet tech is now a reality with this year’s first launches. 5g will come online and complement areas without fiber. The wireline tech is dead. Just a matter of time. The little that remains will be easily subcontracted out. This article is from a year ago. Since then , it’s even better than this article thought at the time.

Like POTS, Wired data will be around for a while.

WiFi in your house is barely reliable, especially for something like gaming. Cell service is spotty everywhere. 5G and Sattelite is just going to be more less than reliable wireless internet. Anyone who needs the internet for anything more than Facebook will want a cable, preferably a fiber, all the way to the home, which is where they should be pushing but aren't.

I’ll unplug to CO and turn off the lights tomorrow . Thank goodness you told me. All this construction at these offices for air handlers is driving me nuts.

T has already stated that their deployment will be geared towards large business areas. The so called 5GE is the upgrade most residential areas will see for the foreseeable future unless you live close to one of those business areas. Lot of unused spectrum is being deployed by T and most of it by upgrading existing facilities. True 5G deployment will be surgical.

5G relies very heavily on fiber deployment. Currently most vendors limited to 5 wireless hops for backhaul and to cover a dense area for high density requires a lot of radios. This investment in 5G is great for the vendors, they get to sell us a ton of hardware and license EMS systems that use a pay by scale model. It will take alot of folks to maintain these systems as they start to age a few years down the road.

5g is only going to make existing areas faster. It's not going to cover areas with no service without new cell sites.

And I've seen little in plans going forward to cover those gaps with new sites.

5G will not be coming to the rural areas anytime soon if ever. They are not going to place fiber so Billy Bob’s truck can navigate to the double wide on its own. My biggest worry in that arena is First Net. No idea of the mandatory level of service that must be provided but would think that it would be high enough so that wireless substitution would be a real alternative for a lot of those customers.

I am farm/rural and been getting Internet from the "water tower" for over 10 years. Either that or Frontier are my choices.

Could not have said it better. 5g is stupid.

I don't know why everyone thinks 5G is going to save the world. Even less so than 4G did. There are still hundreds of thousands of rural areas that will never see high speed internet until LEO is readily available. These people still need copper landlines to stay connected to the world. And it's not a small population.

Speaking of cell towers. Anybody noticing all of the cellular equipment going up on the water towers? Noticed it a couple of years ago but now the one in my area is completely ringed with equipment.

@ 1ghp, you really need some anger management counseling. The OP really struck your nerve and you’re making his case for him as you sound scared out of your mind for your job.

so all of you fine wireline folks who say this is a troll post, and to disregard it: i am under the internet services contract. ever heard of it? we got an extension with an aggregate 12+% raise over 4 years, without asking and 2 months early. why? because we are in the data centers. GFXO. specialty ops, data center ops. you dont even know we are here. i could do the work of every CO tech in the area (I used to be one, so yes I know). we don't need you at all. wise up boys, sh--s about to hit the fan.

Oh shut the fk up you douche! If you believe the sky is falling then get down the road already but this chicken little “the sky is falling” c-ap is getting pretty old. Yes technology is changing and pots over copper is going away but not overnight, neither is all the fiber to the prem, business and cell towers. If you really believe it’s all over then get out of telecom all together but stop acting like a whiny bch...

Ok, and then what? My heart won't stop, the sun will come out tomorrow and 150 years from now , we and everyone we ever met , or have known, will all be dead. Water is wet, ice is cold. Any other obvious observations?

Copper is becoming irrelevant. Still have a lot of customers on it though. Few years ago Verizon tried to force customers off of that vehicle. Didn’t go over well. Looks like they are trying to increase the wireless quality and reach and let the attrition keep them out of that mine field.
