MW prem tech here. Not sure about other work areas, we change our pairs, gaff climb, %99 percent of the time i dont make tfs tickets, dont want to hear them b--ch when they make twice what i do so i take care of my own issues. Im happy to have a job. I know business is changing. So in the mean time while i still have a job. You should have prem techs bury their own drops. The contractors s---. Damage them half the time, dont bury them completely. Youd have less unhealthy fat a-- riding FMLA if we buried our own stuff. Good for the immune system to get in the dirt. Good for physical health to work a shovel. The fat asses that get paid the same as me and b--ch and do half the work would voulentarily leave if they had to sweat once in a while. Im all about the single dispatch. Just dont up end the guys who gave you 20-30 years of there blood sweat and tears and time away from family. Im going on 10 years. Doesnt make me look forward to the next twenty or feel secure that im going to get out what ive put in. Take care of us, we'll take care of the company. Without customer facing americans alls your left with is india anx the Philippines going off a spread sheet.

I am a Midwest prem tech also.
I really like the work. I try to avoid dropping helpers also, especially now that we were flat out told we are fighting for the work. Yea I do remove bridge taps, I do cut in my pairs when a terminal is not connected to anything, run bypasses, I always own my bulk. I typically go above and beyond to get my customers in service and try to keep my numbers up because I take pride in what I do. There is a lot of intrinsic value in what we do.
Unfortunately none of that matters here. Survived the last surplus’s by the skin of my teeth and I will now probably be getting bumped soon. Union would rather save people who can’t even show up to work and to anyone above your manager you are just a number on an expense report. I know which techs I want working next to me clearing the load, but it just doesn’t matter at the end of the day.
Core techs have the ability to work below their pay grade and have seniority. You will see the same issues coming from them when the bumping begins among those job titles. Have seen it many times. Might not be the amount of angst if the older guys decide to leave and open up slots. A lot say no initially but when nut cutting time comes and they realize they no longer have the ability to get weekends off or all the vacation weeks, etc. some will say screw it.
OP, NEVER ask this company for more work responsibility without something of value in return. I for one, do NOT feel like burying my own drops. Because you KNOW we will not be getting sufficient time credit (most likely none) or a wage increase or put into the core contract or any degree of job security when the company no longer needs us.
Do your job reasonably well and take care of your customer, but never go above and beyond for the sociopaths running this company.

As long as the prem has not made my job harder
We can not help what the company is doing but it still works better if we are a team
I hope things change for the better
But regardless we should do a good job and take pride in our work... even if it is our last day
