How do I get out of the union???

Don't listen to the union bullies and smob mentality on here about leaving the union, etc.
If it's really that great, the services would be worth paying for. That my folks is how Capitalism works.
If you do have the option to leave (Right to Work state), you will still be in a bargained for position. You still get the same pay, same vacation, benefits, etc and by law the union still has to represent you. You just can't vote on union contracts, etc.
The only scenario the above is not true is if a job title decertifies from the union, which would entail a 50% vote of everyone covered under that bargained for agreement to vote them out. (Obviously this scenario is much more difficult).
Final statement. I do not see why any Prem Techs pay the union. The union sold y'all out to pad the core folks with job security and better benefits. Also if they really were worth there dues, there would be zero contractors out there installing DirecTV, Wireless Local Loop at homes, etc before at&t laid off a single Prem Tech. That is there NUMBER ONE job. They haven't done it.

You are correct. You do not have to wait for the 1 or 2 week window to get out of the union. It doesn't make any difference what state you are in. Send your letter to HR to have them stop taking dues out of your paycheck. They have to abide by the law. The union cannot hold you hostage for their dues. Plain and simple.
I know from experience. It takes about two pay periods to see the results.
It is against the law to leave the union in most states except right to work states but even then you loose your extra pto and hourly by leaving the union!!
One of the biggest reasons to leave the Union is because they WILL take their percentage of dues out of your final severance. ( Voluntary or involuntary )
Considering what they've done for their members in the past decade, I wouldn't recommend staying in any longer. It's a waste of money. Once enough members stop paying them money, they -might- start paying attention. But I doubt it.
This, of course, assumes you live in a State that allows you to leave the Union. Not all are so lucky.
To answer your question, however, they make it dead simple to join but rather a pain in the a-- to leave. The other answers are correct in that you have a week or two window each year where you must submit, in writing, via registered mail, your intentions to leave the Union.
Doing so, however, comes at a cost.
You will be blacklisted by your fellow co-workers if they remain. Expect all sorts of harassment.
@bpi....T leases tower space from cell tower companies. T SSIM tech gets fiber circuit from the CO out to the base of the tower. T Wireless Tech connects the circuit to their equipment. Contractor runs the lines from the equipment up to the top of the tower. A lot of the newer stuff has a fiber only connection at the bottom of the tower with the electronics up top, this way T can contract out that work from the Wireless Tech(wireless techs don't tower climb for insurance purposes).
All work with 5g already has folks in place to do the job.
Why? $30 or $40 buck a paycheck can get you $1000’s more as long as you have seniority. If you have low seniority go somewhere you can have higher seniority specially work centers. No one really cares as log as you have seniority. Sit back just put a bogus info on MSOC and you are done. People around here have no plan for retirement work 30+Years still come to work to collect check. I’m in my 20+ year service as soon as I hit 30 I am out.
Send a certified letter to HR saying to quit deducting union dues from your check. The 10 day rule in April is BS the union throws out there to keep you trapped. If the union is so great why is it that you can join 365 days a year but can only get out in a 10 day window? Hmmm......

Why are there layoffs when I hear 5G is going to require lots of towers to go up to install antennas? Is this the job of union employees or is that a different company? I don't work for ATT so just asking.

In the SE you have to send a registered letter to the CWA and HR, Has to be within 10 days of the contract anniversary(august 8th in our case) If your letter is not filled in 100% perfectly, they will reject it. Check your contract book and good luck

Google “CWA Constitution”. Article 5, Section 4d tells you how.
It depends on what contract you are under. In your contract book it will give you the dates to notify the union to rescind your membership. It generally requires you write a letter requesting to leave and sent to your union. The letter needs to be sent certified mail usually within a window of time specified in the contract. You go to work at McDonald’s, you don’t have to worry about being in a Union there.
You have about a ten day window to get out of it and it’s right around the time your contract renews each year. I don’t know if it is affected by working without a contract like many of us are currently.
I seem to recall that you can only do it one week out of the year. I think it was a week each April. You had to write a letter, using specific wording, and send it to a specific company address, by registered mail. The instructions are on the company website, but it was hell to find it.
It is against the law to quit the union and would lead to instant termination if you tried
