Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Do you remember...

when AT&T used to treat its employees right? I do. It was decades ago. Literally. People who say it was better a few years ago are wearing rose colored glasses. Things started going downhill a long, long time ago.

Since I doubt the pattern will change, I feel for people who'll have to still work here once I retire in a year or so. One thing's for sure, things will not improve. Ever.

I seriously had my supervisor tell me when I had to leave early for the second time in the entire school year to take my kids to school say “I don’t care about your kid problems”. You need call such and such to get the problem fixed next time”. It was not a big problem.

So yes, the culture has changed as they are hiring managers with no social or people skills.

There was the good all days believe me you’re just too old and you forgot! Pacbell blows AT&T out of the water on customer service & the way they treated their own employees! We used to do same day business Repair!.... good luck with that with AT&T, lucky to get somebody over there in two weeks....It’s embarrassing!! I Don’t wear the branded shirts anymore, because I was sick of people yelling at me off duty. They hate AT&T

Even when Ma Bell was a monopoly people felt like it was the worst run company in the world where nepotism was rampant and managers would hire their whole families that hadn't even finished high school. At least the current cutthroat environment has rid us of the mouth breathers. I've been through AT&T to SW Bell to SBC and back again. There never was a good ole days.

I haven’t worn any branded attire at work or off the job for quite awhile...I’ll concede I have made a great living with good retirement....but this company has become slave to the shareholder as has many corporations! Employees use to be family here....now they’ll suspend, lay-off and fire you anything they can use against you! The once proud days of a great company are ancient history.

I remember when the US president treated the country with respect as well. Unfortunately this is corporate america, not justice T.

“What does Legacy AT&Ts performance have do with anything he said?”

Instead of canning every single upper level manager who ran legacy T into the ground, SBC kept them on and gave them decision making authority. That was a HUGE mistake.

once I retire in a year or so

thank you for finally leaving! you and all the other old farts, are the biggest part of the problem. you think that ATT owes you everything. ATT owes you nothing. ATT should have canned you 20 yrs ago. this way, you would have had a reality check. you would have realized that you had no marketable skills. did ATT create this problem...or did you? at what point in time do people pull-up their pants and take control of their life? people get fired, every day in this world. do they whine about their company keeping them on the payroll for 30yrs? but, you never got terminated, because ATT was too stupid not to force you to leave. instead, ATT allowed you to rot/retire in place. you have no skills, and no life outside of ATT. again, thanks for finally leaving! enjoy all the money you stole from ATT!

@Z2RLJvI-qao: What does Legacy AT&Ts performance have do with anything he said? Ed Whitacre had the opportunity to name the combined company Bell South, SBC, Cingular, Pacific Bell, Ameritech but no. He chose AT&T because of the brand recognition.

The pendulum has swung for me regarding At&t... ... I was once proud when it was Pacific Telephone... even as Pacific Bell... ... SBC came along and the proudness started to fade... Then as At&t well... it was gone... ... not ashamed but not bragging... I’ll wear the 40yr retirement ring on occasion but all the branded logo apparel.... garbage time... ... actually donating to goodwill... I know At&t has issue with branded apparel being donated... ... their specific instructions way back when was to remove the logo... cut it out... ... I have brand new branded tee’s and collared shirts still in the plastic in the donation bag.... ... I just don’t want them... ... I’m happy I got 40 in but I want no association with the Company anymore...

“we are just SBC with a different name in a vain attempt to live off of the good name recognition that AT&T used to have” you realize that AT&T was failing miserably when SBC picked it up, right?

Old timer here and I remember treating some customers like c-ap. However they had no recourse other than to file a PUC complaint. We were the only provider and acted as such. Plus everything ran through our copper lines. Technology was a different color Princess phone. The introduction of CLECs was the beginning of a change in the script as far as competition. That AT&T is going or has gone the way of the model T.

All companies treats employees as numbers. With AT&T it’s all about numbers and their bottom line. Do they care about employees? It depends. Is that employee bringing income and meeting their metric? That manager or managers will manipulate their employees to continue bringing in income but they don’t genuine care. Do they care about their customers? NO. Employees and managers lie to consumers just to get their services. They say they treat everyone fairly, professionally and ethically. That is HUGE LIE. From DIRECTORS TO AREA MANAGERS they are racist and play favorites.

Bellsouth was already micromanaging and constant looking for ways to write people up for every little thing years before they merged with SBC. Legacy AT&T treated people decent back in the day, but even they started doing the same to their employees and customers.

I started out with SWBell Telephone and I agree, that company cared about its employees and customers as well (and made a profit). Now att doesn’t care about anyone (employees and customers).

I came to work for BellSouth in 1999. The company cared about it's employees and customers. When AT&T(SBC) took over, all of that changed. Now all they care about are the C-Suite execs and big stock holders. SMH

You also have to remember that the old AT&T from years ago was a totally different company than what we have today. Today's AT&T is just SBC re-branded, we are just SBC with a different name in a vain attempt to live off of the good name recognition that AT&T used to have.
