Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Promotions of the unqualified

In my department, there is an ongoing cycle of high level managers being promoted from unrelated departments of the company. They of course have no idea how our sector of the business runs, and always make things worse until they get promoted in another unrelated part of the business. Then another person no one has ever heard of comes in and the cycle continues. They tell us it is because these people are well rounded.

Is this a company wide thing? It seems so counter productive to helping the company be successful.

All corporations do this. Silicon Valley wouldn't exist if corporations weren't filled with incompetent bureaucrats. Took me a long time to realize the innovation process in America.

  1. Federal government funds military research projects at elite universities.

  2. Technology created at elite universities is transformed into enterprise or consumer products in Silicon Valley.

  3. Corporation acquires the technology by selling & marketing product in a near monopoly environment.

Federal government -> elite university -> Silicon Valley -> corporation

They move management around, so that no one is accountable for anything. There is a lot of c-ap out there. New guy comes in. Someone tries to hold him accounable. New guy says, "hey, I inherited this problem, nothing I can do about it". Rinse and repeat

They have done that for 50 years. People are selected for their management skills' not knowledge of what they will manage. They will learn the business. Good manages will be willing to learn from their team. However there are some management assignments to just stir things up, and attempt to change some culture and comfort.

they have regularly moved upper management around into departments they know nothing about. why not put someone incompetent into the top slot of a tech division? where do you think all the idiocy of endlessly accounting for every minute of the day came from? you know dilbert was written by a Pac Bell guy about Pac Bell and that was decades ago at this point.

"And at many other companies. before ATT bough CNN it was and still is a ratings disaster, so why not fire Zucker? Maybe he has compromising pictures on someone. Seriously though and sadly I see it a lot here (been here over 20 years). It will not stop as many promotions are not based on competence but who one knows (in more than the usual way hint hint)"

This! It is almost show incompetency and you will get promoted.
