Of course they’re going to say things are improving. What can they say - things are getting worse? One thing you might want to ask them is if you will be expected to come in and start cutting people. I’ve seen it happen where they brought people in to wield the axe - and then axed that person when the deed was done. Make sure they’re not just using you to do the dirty work.
