Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Advice from a 15-20 year veteran to all existing employees

Best advice I can give anyone on this thread who is concerned of an involuntary RIF is this. I spend the greater part of 20 years with VZ....sales to HQ....it's a great company. All companies go through changes, and this one started with Diego coming in. Not at all saying that was a bad move, but that was the beginning of the new leadership regime in the making. Companies change, C-level execs change. But we can't always expect everything to always run the same. Any company is only as good as who runs is in conjunction with who works on the floor. Verizon still remains a great company, but the VSP was the best option for me and most others because we needed to diversify our resumes and personal experience.

So, what I would say to anyone not even close to retirement and fitting the concern of an involuntary....don't.... Spend as much time with Verizon which is right for you and the company, but make sure you are comfortable enough with your experience to go elsewhere on your own or prepared if that decision is not yours. Nothing is forever, and your comfort-zone is great for your growth and potential, but not for the long haul.

You’re on a sinking ship with a parachute and you’re gonna run to an island? Weird.

Jump before you get thrown off the sinking ship... It started long before Diego got there, the others before him took the parachute and ran to the nearest island in the sun.

Some of the best advice I have heard about the company came from a former GTE Systems Tech about 19 years ago. His daughter had graduated from college and she was job hunting and figuring a plan for her life.

What he told here was along this line ... "Honey, you need to wh--e every company you work for. None of them will ever be there for you or want you to have a long term career with them. Their only interest is in what they can get from you today. At some point they will throw you out. What you need to do is plan on 3 to 5 years with each company. Get a 401K from the start and s--- as much money out of each company you can and put that into a 401K or other investments. Every time you change jobs you move that 401K. Take every thing you can from each company and give

a fair days work for the pay but in no circumstances let them abuse you, or think that for one minute they give a damn about you."

He was %100 correct.
