Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Dead weight

Many managers are dead weight and collecting a check for years.

1st and 2nd level managers are useless.

With everything being done online what exactly do managers do?

Stealing money for years being yes people.

I cant wait for these freeloaders to be gone and our company becomes respectable again.

I do think it is important to distinguish management between the staff(not meaning the higher ups) support type managers and the report-to's(I&M/C&E 1st lines). A lot of good folks on the staff side that do their job well with some that require serious skill. These folks don't appear to be in on the us vs them plot. I guess it's debatable that their job could be done just as well by a lower wage person. Not saying it's right, just saying it could be debatable in some circumstances.

I will say that the report-to 1st lines do appear to fall into the yes-man paper pushing category. Definitely a get it from both sides job. Some know that walking into the job, some find out the hard way. Some seem to want to work with the crew everyday and some seem to want to work against the crew every day. Count yourself blessed if you have the first, that will get you the things you need, stay out of the way the rest of the time, and go to bat for you when needed. Very few 1st lines left that even remotely know their @$$ from a whole in the ground these days.

Sad when the best thing you can say about your manager is that you only see him once a month when he does his safety observation.

It is definitely within reason to say that their work could be absorbed by the 2nd level, but hey, when do we operate within reason?

I am union and I have had many good managers. I am on my 10th in 20 years. I have only had one bad manager. Boy he was a doosey. A cheater. A code of biz conduct violator. Just a bad person. But,he got demoted for his shenanigans. I have several friends that are second level managers. Used to be techs. Good people that will go to bat for you. Sure. There are lousy managers and lousy techs as well.

Don’t worry, all managers will be fired soon. If a manager could answer his phone and drive to a customers premise to restore or install T1, ethernet or business voip service we might keep him or her around. Either their to stupid to learn how to do it or they don’t want to. Bon par le gestionnaire..

Craft makes more than 2nd level managers. I do.

It simply is hours. If you are pushing 60 hours a week. Hell yes they do.

The difference is potential bonuses.

I am not factoring in OT.

Those that can do.

Those that cant teach.

Those that cant teach manage.

Making broad statements about "managers" makes you look foolish. Many of us "managers" have nothing to do with managing people. We're advanced technical support, labs, system administration, network security, data management. Positions requiring advanced degrees and skill sets that very few if any craft workers could attain.

Front line managers are there to pass out a vacation schedule and discipline a tech if need be. That is all, techs deal with customers that managers won't talk to.

att needs a 3rd party consulting firm, to perform a review on its management structure. the resulting report would reduce mgmt by 50%, and save the company a load of cash

Time to dump the landline business and all the overhead it entails. Losing business, will never recover.

Amen.

Tired of having to hear about work that needs to be done for a bonus they want to hit while repairs and customers are pushed to the side.
