Hey, surplussed prem tech."I know about latency" Go away, move on. You have such insight to the future of telecommunications that AT&T could not afford to keep you on payroll for fear you would disrupt the entire business model.

You chumps are are dime a dozen. AT&T hires a hundred of you and 98 of you are gone within a year.

You sit there and type what you type making the assumption that what is..."is"... and that nothing will ever change or progress.

As to earth-based telcos... fiber will feed 5G radios and data centers, "CO's" and not much else. Since 5G is not one technology, but a combination of technologies working in unison, there will be plenty of bandwidth. Latency concerns are becoming non-existent. And data caps will either rise to what's currently offered for wireline services or they'll be eliminated all together. It's the only way if they want to get rid of wireline completely as consumer service.

You're thinking inside of a box. Get out of that box and look up these things. These are things that are resulting in your impending job loss. Like a hurricane, you can't stop it. But you can see it coming and prepare as needed.

Oh, and satellite has the ability to completely render earth-based telcos totally OBSOLETE. Maybe just have fiber to critical infrastructure (government, law enforcement, military)...

Long response - sat will not replace 5g or fiber feed service - will be used in under served areas (rural) or areas that do not have the infrastructure. Cost, Latency, and Data Caps will always be an issue with this type of service.

I have heard of latency. You should read up on these new satellite networks. That way you don't get caught with your pants down and come back to this board crying about losing your job once StarLink, Amazon, etc. go live in a few years.

Once upon a time, cars only went 25mph.. but they figured out how to make them faster.

Once upon a time, you had to dial up a phone number and use a 3600 baud modem to get online. Now you mobile internet and broadband.

Once upon a time, you maxed out at 40gbps on a single strand of fiber. A couple of years ago some German engineers figured out how to push a terabit per second through that same fiber.

You really should do more research. The satellites will be "low earth orbit," yes... but there will be thousands of them. Mesh networked and overlapping in coverage. They're also relatively cheap and expendable.

Also, the transport mechanism is getting cheaper too. Have you ever heard of SpaceX, by chance?? They'll be able to launch dozens (if not hundreds of these things) at a time... at $50-60 million per launch, if not cheaper.

As to Google Fiber... Had the old school telcos not buried all the startups in litigation blocking "One Touch Make Ready," we'd have fiber all over the country by now.

Lots of low orbit satellites? Yeah, right up there with driverless cars and Google fiber everywhere. Remember that? It wasn't the technical hurdles it was the mundane logistics that made Google give up. These Silicon Valley unicorns are all about hype to goose the venture capital. The lower the orbit the shorter satellites last. It all looks cool now. Wait until the maintenance costs kick in. Silly, silly, silly.

AT&T doesn't need this to ruin them. They have incompetent, spendthrift executives to do that.

I'm pretty decent at forecasting AT&T's future... So here goes... (Pay attention kiddos!)

In the next 5-10 years the satellite providers will lock down the consumer internet market. Companies like AT&T will eventually only have a presence in the industry as owners of terrestrial fiber that link major data centers and provide hardened hard-wired services for critical infrastructure, law enforcement, government, and medical facilities. Nothing more.

They will make most of their money from being content owners (Time Warner) and not much else. And don't be surprised if they sell off the fiber infrastructure because it's just not profitable enough.

Should they keep the fiber infrastructure --- due to it's low maintenance --- all work on the plant will subbed out. No W2 employees with their exorbitant costs (pensions, healthcare...etc).

FYI: No one needs 10G service.

A 4K stream consumes roughly 15mbps+/-... A 4 tv household would need 60mbps+/- plus some headroom for HSIA.

Give the average fam 100mbps they're good.

I'm sure Amazon, SpaceX, et. al., will do just fine.
