Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The surgery was successful, but the patient died.

“AT&T has landed two prestigious awards from Chief Learning Officer magazine - tops in Learning Strategy and No 2 in overall Learning Development.”

Meanwhile, surplus happening across the business units, new and old. Best in class training consists of sudo power point playbacks and knowledge checks that any decent developer would be embarrassed to show their cohorts.

Randy: “... our learning and development program is best in class.” Where is the revenue? Where are the high demand products and services? Where is the stock price?

When inquired about numbers around job transformation, and those whom had successfully made the transition, reply was “crickets”, shocking. For a company that lives and dies by metrics, it is funny how certain things are not accounted for.

What is accounted for are number of courses offered, number of completions, etc., very important to keep the executives entertained with fancy graphs and charts. Way to go, guys!

Four or five years ago the company launched its "Workforce 2020" program. Like most things at AT&T it kind of morphed and was eventually abandoned for the next shiny object to capture the attention of executive management.

It from being Udacity and Coursera based to being AT&T University based. The Udacity and Coursera courses were better than AT&T University but they were not extensive enough to develop true expertise. The AT&T University courses were silly little jokes that gave almost no professional level education. I'm not sure what the company expected to happen. I don't see it having helped many people keep their jobs. All flash and no substance like many things at AT&T. Kind of like 5Ge.
