Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is this what AT&T meant by Workforce 2020??

Layoff all of your managers that are about to reach MR75 (40yo+ & 20+ncs), that should have been the next round of qualified leaders in the business, and replace them with young college grads with no experience? I guess, in this day and age, anyone over 40 is considered a senior citizen??

Sounds like age discrimination ...... but I signed a release not to sue the company just so I could get my severance pay.....seems like "hush money" to me! F-ATT!

PS: soooooo relieved to be away from that horrible company.......Just in time for summer!

your only hope really is getting the media on your side and the eeoc, unless you know some politician like bernie on the inside who might give a flip

@-1gca,

LLC's are limited "modern" versions of corporations, made for the "little guy." But it's not the only way to incorporate. "Corp" comes from the Latin "corpus," -- the body. To incorporate is to "create the body," or "make a/the body."

Corporations come in different varieties depending on your jurisdiction/country/etc. In the U.S, your standard "Inc." corporation and "LLC" corporation can elect to be treated differently with the taxing authorities. For example, and "S" corp (for the little guy), and the standard "C" corp (the big boys.)

Either way, corporations were developed thousands of years ago by merchants trading throughout the Mediterranean.

" Corporations have been around for thousands of years. They serve a legitimate function in our human society --- all the way back to the Romans, Phoenicians, etc."

The modern LLC, with its concomitant ease of abuse is much younger, arising from the 17th century colonial empires.

"A friendly warning if you consider fighting back on age discrimination.....you can refuse to sign the release but a few dollars would be wisely spent for an attorney sit down. "

Not necessary to sue. If you believe you have been the target of age discrimination, simply get the EEOC involved. They will force AT&T to disclose the numbers of folks they have laid off in addition to what the average age of the employees are.

AT&T isn't afraid of their employees. They are, however, somewhat careful about getting any government entity involved.

Sorry man, but this "blame the evil corporations" c-ap is going to get us NOWHERE. Look, corporations are only beholden to their SHAREHOLDERS. Period. Well, that and the S.E.C. If you want a say in the business' activities, you need to be a shareholder.

Instead of the CWA squeezing every last penny per hour they could out of AT&T all these years, maybe they should of traded monetary compensation for actual stock or stock options. You know, "put some skin in the game." Instead of being a bunch of "takers" and whiners. Then you'd have a say in how stuff gets done.

The CWA and every Union out there is screwing their members/workers. Once upon a time, Unions were "good" and useful. Unions came about not for "wages," but for safety at the workplace and limiting the hours that could be mandated. Way back when...1920's, 30's... whatever... people would go to work and lose limbs and lives. Unions came about to keep people SAFE.

Today, a Union's primary "raison d'etre" (reason to exist) is to get more money. Nothing more. I still can't justify a CORE tech's wage scale. It's ABSURD... $40 an hour to play with some wires. Gimme an EFFIN BREAK y'all! As a Wire Tech, I felt fairly compensated when I was topped out at $25 an hour in 2016. WT's performed more unique functions than a CORE tech for only 60% of a CORE tech's pay. They're coming for you NEXT, CORE...

But you know how it goes. Push, push, push... the breaking point will be reached. Guess what? Technology and automation is coming for everybody. There's nothing you can do about it except to adapt. If you don't want to adapt, you'll starve.

Money is like water --- it seeks the path of less resistance. And water is powerful. Given enough time, it will carve away at anything. Just look at the Grand Canyon. The biggest problem I see in this country is that we've been screwed with the piss poor education we've received. You can't expect people to understand economics if you don't teach them. And the last time I checked, economics is barely taught in U.S. primary schools. So this is why you have a nation full of people looking for HANDOUTS.

You guys have no one to blame but yourselves. The writing was on the wall for the last 5 years. Yet you still insist that your employer owes you something other than a paycheck for work completed as needed. Guess what? They don't need you anymore!

The network has migrated to SDN --- Software Defined Network.

The plant has migrated to OTA --- Over the Air.

The need for actual "hands on" labor has drastically been reduced. Deal with it. It's life. It's progress. It's what you get in a technologically advanced society.

If you don't like it, give up your HSIA, smart phones, PC's, satellite TV, etc... You all rave about your latest Samsung smartphone or iPhone or 80" 4K OLED yadda yadda yadda, yet you don't see how you're contributing to your own irrelevancy.

Wake up. As our world accelerates towards the "Singularity," you will be required to retrain and adapt at a much faster rate than previous generations.

And if y'all really that worried, p-ss-d off, whatever... you'd all stop blowing your inflated salaries on the c-ap y'all spend it on and start preparing for this new reality. Stop with the corporate blame game. Corporations have been around for thousands of years. They serve a legitimate function in our human society --- all the way back to the Romans, Phoenicians, etc.

AT&T is not your welfare check. It's a business. And no business is going to keep labor it no longer needs.

True the industry is changing and corporations feel that there is no way to make huge enough profits by paying live able wages. It is what is happening every where. The view is the same over the sustain for liveable wages of the minimum wage arguments. People have very little value and it is shown by what ATT and other corporations are doing- eliminating workers because at almost any price it is too much. Get ready for it AI and automation will take over almost all jobs. It is sad, this is not about your value or your worth- we as a society have chosen to support Corporate exponential growth and pushing money to the 1% and this is the fall out. Corporations cannot sustain exponential growth unless they have essentially free labor. Unfortunately that means no good

Paying jobs to support living income for us.

As someone who quit Fall 2016 because I saw the surplus coming... you guys still don't get it!

These layoffs are purely a result of technology. If you can't add up the following: 1) 5G pushing 2-3gbps 2000ft from node in a moving car; 2) All TV delivered via streaming, requiring no CPE = 3) No need for a technician.... you really don't deserve your CORE $40 an hour.

This isn't about greed or "the man" sticking it to you. The technology is dramatically changing the required workforce needed to maintain customer circuits. People like "easy." If all they have to do is call up 800-288-2020, order HSIA, get mailed a 5G SIM card enabled RG w/wifi... why would you need a "technician?"

You guys overvalue yourselves and what you do for a living. As someone with no college or formal training and being completely self-taught in "IT," is was shocking to me when I finally arrived at my yard and realized that most of you only know how to match the colors on the wires! LOL!!

95% of AT&T techs have no technical background and could care less. And that's why they didn't see this coming and I did. My whole yard said I was nuts in 2016 when I told them that we'll be gone by 2020. They laughed when I told them the preliminary pre-spec ratification results of tests AT&T conducted in Middleton, NJ and Austin, TX with 5G radios. They laughed.

That was during summer 2016. I quit in September. $25 an hour wasn't worth the grief anymore, especially knowing that a huge surplus was coming and that the CORE tech run CWA was just playing the Wire Techs and stringing them along while only protecting themselves at bargaining.

I don't take pleasure in knowing people are losing their jobs --- usually. But in this case: Wire Techs, I told you so. And CORE techs, you all a bunch of greedy a-- mofo's. And don't worry, there will be more surplus' coming in the next two years or so... AND CORE WILL BE NEXT!

If all you have to do is string fiber to 5G radios and to the CO's, what the hell do you need any AT&T tech for?? They will sub all that sh-- out.

Good luck boys!

"T’s restructuring plan is working. The stock continues to rise as Wall Street gains faith in us. We are on the right path to being the global leader in 5g, bright days are ahead all. I for one am all in on T’s plan."

Brilliant sarcasm. I almost was ready to chalk this up as a corporate shill from the social media team then I realized that it was sarcasm. Thank you.

Anyone who would waive their severance to hire a lawyer and try to sue T is supremely mo--nic. An exercise in futility.

A friend of mine talked to a lawyer in South Carolina about filing an age discrimination suit against T. The estimate of legal fees was $5000-$10,000. Of course no guarantee of victory. They have hundreds of lawyers and can delay the outcome for years. Do your homework and go for it if you have the time and $$,

Really amazing AT&T is downsizing at Warner Media and restructuring there but offering buyouts for Turner employees...

AT&T Inc.’s WarnerMedia took steps to reduce head count at its Turner unit, which was essentially dissolved as a result of a wide-ranging restructuring announced earlier this month.

The company is offering buyouts to U.S. Turner employees who are at least 55 years old and would have 10 or more years of service by year-end, according to a memo sent to employees Wednesday that was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

The buyouts at Turner were widely expected as AT&T T, +1.13% started to fundamentally reshape the entertainment empire it acquired for more than $80 billion after clearing the last antitrust hurdle late last month. Eligible employees will get four weeks’ pay for every year of service, according to a person familiar with the matter. The payouts are capped at two years.

Just take the money and takea break. Young college grads will join for $15/hour play pool on company time, learn new skills and then abruptly leave for a better job. Thats when theyll come back for the 40 yr+ loyal folks.

A friendly warning if you consider fighting back on age discrimination.....you can refuse to sign the release but a few dollars would be wisely spent for an attorney sit down.

Can you afford to lose and be out 6 months pay?

Can the attorney tell you what your final fee, to fight an age discrimination suit would be, worst case?

How long would it take?

How many have they done?

How many have they won?

Talk with someone who has actually done it, then decide. Companies like T try to out last a former employee....delay, delay.
