Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Here are the plans for current day union-represented workforce

This is coming from extremely top level sources. I have very little detail right now beyond what's here, but I will try to get answers to questions.

Midwest and Legacy have a handshake understanding for their represented employees. The other regions are said to follow in the next two years.

Field employees like prem techs will no longer be represented by the CWA. This will extend to others such as service reps and "transactional" (their words) positions as well. So not 100% but close to 75-80% of represented members will be affected.

Those employees will then be allowed to nominate for contract positions before being removed as W-2 employees. Those who accept will be the first to be onboarded as 1099-based workers.

There is a new app tentatively called T-Dispatch which is similar to the Uber model. Jobs will show up in the app and anyone within range can "bid" on them. For phone reps, these "jobs" will be in the form of hour-long blocks of time.

Upon completion of each job/block, credit will be applied to the account of the tech/rep which can then be redeemed for cash which is then direct deposited and 1099'd.

Extremely busy times (natural disasters, etc) can trigger surge pricing for certain jobs. Conversely, if multiple techs/reps bid on jobs/blocks that have multiple "takers," the app will trigger a "Dutch auction" type scenario that lowers the pay until only one person (the lowest bidder) gets the job.

Metrics will be gathered by customers much like star ratings for Uber drivers. This will effect future pay if the star ratings are too low on average. Maintaining a five star rating could lead to premiums for certain jobs (this is not certain yet).

An additional bonus is that instead of cash, a tech/rep can redeem their points for gift cards at a premium (for example, $100 in points could get $103 in Walmart gift cards or up to $120 in Omaha Steaks or Bed Bath and Beyond gift cards. These are obviously just examples). So, there is a way to supplement your pay if you are going to go shopping at e.g. Walmart anyway.

Overall, this is expected to reduce labor costs by 65%-75%.

T-Dispatch will also have in-app training so that new workers from the general public can be trained quickly and become part of the labor pool for each job. This should drive down costs even more due to the Dutch auction style model of assigning jobs.

It is believed that most workers will choose to drive for ride-sharing and/or delivery companies between jobs, since they will be out anyway.

Techs will use their own vehicles most of the time (as independent contractors, they can't be given company vehicles). They will also be offered the opportunity to buy their safety, diagnostic, and repair equipment at a pretty nice discount. Those with jobs that require larger trucks and equipment can lease then from the company at a decent rate. But remember, these jobs will pay more in the app. So it's expected to be a wash cost wise.

Hope that helps.

I just read all the posts here. I have to say that those of you dismissing this all as "trolling" deserve what's coming for you. You boys need to stop laughing, open your minds/eyes, and grow up. After all, it's YOUR life we are talking about here. Your mortgage, your car payment, your credit report, your family's well-being.

What is so outlandish and crazy about a "T-Dispatch" app?? Let's go through this one step at a time:

  1. All the various implementations of 5G (Nokia's, Huwawei's, etc.) are pushing fiber-like speeds at +2000 feet from the node/radio.

  2. The fiber deployed to the SAI's in the 2000's (Project Lightspeed) placed fiber within 5000ft +/- of most prems in T's service areas.

  3. The most recent fiber "layover" that has taken place most recently in the last few years has fiber going down the street now.

5G is not a "single" technology at work. It's multiple technologies/frequencies/antenna types/deployments working together to achieve those multi-gig speeds. Sure, some neighborhoods may only achieve 500mbps due to distance. Denser areas will achieve 1-3gbps because of small radios sitting on the poles every few blocks or so. In cities, each building will likely utilize it's existing fiber feed in the tombs and deploy a local radio on the roof.

The bandwidth is there. The "network" and its "configuration" won't be "physically defined" (manual labor plugging in jumpers). It will be SDN --- Software Defined Network --- on a computer screen, accessible by anyone, anywhere in the world (so long as they are authorized by AT 5G radio delivery/access = No tech roll to plug jumpers, pull a homerun, set-up CPE, etc.

No more customers having to take a day off work for an install because now they get a 5G SIM card enabled wifi RG --- IN THE MAIL!

So what would you need a tech for???

Well, the occasional grandma or id--t that doesn't know how to follow instructions and/or sign-on to a wifi network. Easy stuff...right???

Enter "T-Dispatch."

Like Uber, any ol' kid out there with basic tech knowledge can pick up BS jobs hooking up grandma's Apple TV to the SIM RG, and then installing DTV Now app to it.

WHOA! Such a difficult task. I wonder how many weeks of training that'll require. Sure hope there's no pole climbing involved.

Uber & Lyft conduct background checks on their drivers via the app. So that's not an issue. And for the record, I was a Wire Tech who was hired 3.5 years after leaving prison having completed an 8 year stint for armed d--g trafficking.

YEP... And I had a Level 2 Background clearance with the company and the state to access sensitive facilities and schools.

So please fellas, I know this s---s... but y'all think you're more important to the company than you really are. This 5G network just simplified the network distribution model and YOU'RE NOT NEEDED ANYMORE!

I can most definitely see an Uber-style app where Geek Squad guys go out and set up your wifi, Apple TV, and printer.

As far as the "plant" goes, ..... the subcontractors will handle that work as needed --- for two thirds of what it cost to keep you around per hour.... not including the luxurious benefit package. There are plenty of fiber subs out there. Dime a dozen. AT&T techs are not special or irreplaceable.

Do the math guys. It's OVER.

Good Luck!

Man, someone has a ton of free time on their hands to make up this elaborate story... Do you really think AT&T is going to let some one sign up on their phone to be come an employee to walk into someone’s house to install service on day one with no background check, training, supervision or disciplinary connection to the company? I mean, riding in a car from one point to another is one thing, letting a stranger in your house with no real connection with a company is another.

I do not doubt that the Big T would consider this as an option. I despise the direction that Randy Boy is taking this company. He is effectively destroying a great communications company and rolling the dice and betting that AT&T will not only compete but be able to dominate in the streaming space that

is inhabited by players such as Netflix and many others that have been doing this for a decade or more. I see bullying as a main tactic to build a subscriber base, not providing a superior service that people clamor for and want to buy. I have never seen it worse. This company is on the edge of failure. I hope I am wrong.

I too have been working on the secret T-dispatch app. The OP has done a good job describing features but left out one critical feature demanded by corporate leadership. Sustained use of T- dispatch increases your pen1s size. I'm serious. I added at least an inch since the beta test started. I hope to be down to my knees by Xmas.

Folks who are trying to will this out of existence by declaring it "spam" or "troll" are not doing yourselves a service.

This is real and it's happening RIGHT NOW. There are at least eleven major TechDev projects going on right now that are going to enable T-Dispatch (not its final name). They have high level funding and are arranged in such a way that few few people know how each project fits in the whole. They are combining provisioning, dispatch, fleet management, plant diagnostics and management...all the parts that are going to enable this drive to the lowest-cost model possible.

There is a reason the training modules on T-Dispatch look like Duolingo. It works and it's geared toward the lowest common denominator, for better or worse. New workers can literally be trained in less than a day.

There is even a module for "fast money" jobs that require NO training at all. The app will simply walk the "tech" through the repair when s/he gets on site, using augmented reality superimposed on the customer's equipment.

The following was not written in any documents (as far as I know) but some numbers tossed around during meetings are eye-popping. For example, they think with the bidding and Dutch auction model that a defective drop can be replaced for less than $12 in labor. Think about that. Today the 'all-in' cost of that job is something like $400 given the truck roll, labor, benefits, insurance, etc. Moving the worker to (a) his/her own vehicle using (b) his/her own equipment with (c) his/her own insurance AND on top of that (d) having people underbid each other by pennies just to get the job, is going to be transformative.

It will all be trialed in Texas this Spring, with wider rollout by summer and then nationwide by 2Q2020.

Sounds good, but I would just have the customers themselves repair the network. Given them some bill credits at first. Then later, no compensation, just a requirement to keep the service.

The FCC would shut At&t down. Nice try hacker.... .Noooo body would be stupid nor desperate enough to take work on a 1099 within a technical position, especially when climbing latter's. AT&T would NEVER stoop that low to even try a stunt like that. It's truly ignorant and insulting.

This is a masterpiece. Did the OP compose this work of fiction on company time while searching for available jobs due to their impending surplus? Me thinks so.

I have to say, please keep it going, you have a flair for writing. Unfortunately that skill is not needed at AT&T (unless you write bogus PR releases).

To all the others that have posted to give credibility to the OP, please continue. Let us see how many fish take the bait.

Best, thread, ever.

Oh, and if you believe the OP. You deserve to get canned.

It’s like Uber for telco techs. You cruise around in your truck waiting for a cable placing job, pole transfer, etc to drop.

I believe DirecTV gift cards will be available in lieu of pay as well.

I've also seen proforma estimates of the training time required for certain jobs. These are the ones available to the general public through T-Dispatch. Premises techs require 6.5 hours of training through the app, and most CSRs require 7 hours. It's a pretty slick application, a lot like DuoLingo, so basically appeals to younger folks who will work for less. It's expected that nose new worries can train between Uber gigs in a few days.

Everyone keeps calling out as troll but if you think the union will support its members your mistaken. T will go the if others as most work will go to “venders or contractors” and only a few regular emoloyees will stay. To much savings for T.

Thank you. I too have been working on the T-Dispatch product. I though it was really odd the way all the IT artifacts associated with it had "Top Secret" stamped in red ink across the top. It was also strange how I was paid with money from burlap sacks, each with "$" printed on the outside.

Thanks for the intel. I have been managing a piece of a T-Dispatch project by Tech Mahindra. We are doing APIs for existing systems, so i wasn't sure what exactly T-Dispatch would be used for. I was wondering why our project had such visibility in the C suite. They have effectively given it carte blanche, which as many of you know, is VERY rare these days. Now I know why.
