Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is AT&T following "Good to Great" or writing a new book to be called "Good to Bad"

The book "Good to Great" by Jim Collins was required reading for AT&T directors and managers but some of the concepts apparently have been ignored by the senior leadership.

One of the points was how some companies try to acquire others outside of their competency to hide their declining performance. Collins finds the main reason certain companies become great is they narrowly focus the company’s resources on their field of key competence.

Buying Time Warner violated this premise from the book. "There’s no evidence of a connection between money and change mastery. And fear doesn't drive change—but it does perpetuate mediocrity. Nor can acquisitions provide a stimulus for greatness: Two mediocrities never make one great company." https://www.jimcollins.com/article_topics/articles/good-to-great.html

We have all seen this movie before and know how it will end. I am saddened for my former co-workers that remain.

Personally, I wonder if AT&T isn't destroying the Telecom side of the business in an effort to save their new darling " Content " side.

I honestly wish the Government would step in and force AT&T to undergo another divestiture to prevent the company from tearing down the Telecom side of things.

Are these books available on the intranet so they can track your progress and completion status and pull reports if necessary for the ones in non compliance ?

@1mpx - Your post beautifully sums up "inspiring human progress" for those who were having trouble comprehending the new mission as espoused by T's visionary leader class.

Shouldn’t they be spending their time making their own groups more successful instead of reading some stupid book and having theoretical discussions about management theory that are way over their heads ?

If you can’t focus on doing one thing good, might as well do a collection of things poorly

Collins' theories are all well and good, but AT&T's mission is to inspire human progress. Also, Collins apparently didn't know about our secret weapon - the book club.
