It looks like the leadership imagined that the headcount should be much lower that the current reduction , achieved by the last wave of layoffs. In that light I ask the question what is the possibility of AT&T offering a buyout to workers that it doesn’t see as part of the company in the future? Seems like a logical move if they want to get rid of a larger amount of workers in a short amount of time.

The surplus for St Louis could very well be satisfied by volunteers taking the VTP.
Next stop - mid June.
If you read the post above (the Seeking Alpha blurb re: buyouts for Turner and HBO management) and you are legacy T, Mobility. whatever company, and you've been here a while...don't get too excited. We will not be seeing anything like that, and you can bet the farm on that. Heck, they're not even offering us standard severance to volunteer to leave anymore. They're just burning and pillaging in the new companies, need to move in the executive teams from the old landline phone company and their buddies from the good ol" boy network to, you know, straighten things out. Like they do.
"Offers" are not done by region. In fact there are no "offers", at least not since last year's MVO, which I would hardly categorize as an offer. Basically it was volunteer to leave and if selected (not guaranteed) they'd give you whatever severance you were entitled to under the severance plan. Additionally, I am quite skeptical of the claim made by @zrq re: stock as I know MANY management folks (up to and including L3) that were caught in last couple surplus events, across several different organizations and business units. and have not heard of any stock grants as another "bonus" headed out the door. He's also talking as if he volunteered and accepted an offer and to my knowledge, again, there have been none since the MVO last year (and that certainly did not include any stock). Something quite fishy with his claims.
@zrq, hold on to that stock. Analysts, from all over Wall St. are upping their rating on T. Either pile the extra 2K of dividends per year back in, buying more stock (which one day might make its own small annuity), or take the divs and invest elsewhere.
They gave you actual stock, which is great, they gave me (and many of us) stock options in the low $30s. When the options expired, ten years later, they were worthless and $3. less than the issue price.
My suggestion, let it ride and good luck.
zrq- If I may ask, what level are you?
I thought they made the offer to everyone, I get the standard severance package ( my case the maximum of 6 months) and they said they can't change that, so they offered 1000 shares of stock (not options - actual stock) as the carrot. I bit (hard). Tomorrows my last day and I retire with the lump sum from pension, severance of 6 months, and a bit over 30K in stock.
Won't happen. Why offer anyone anything if they can just cut people at will?
Rumor in my group is no offer. They don’t want to pay you to leave unless they surplus you.
I don’t know what the chances are. There’s no rhyme or reason to how they operate. Some regions seem to get offers while others do not. I wish they’d do that though because a lot of people would take it with a decent offer. Especially if it was similar to the offer Verizon made it’s people! Additionally, they’d get rid of a lot of higher senior people allowing the younger folks to continue working and they’d look good to all: employees and public!
