Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Brutal work environment

Has anybody ever worked for a company that was worse than Verizon when it comes to politics, toxic work environment, and bosses who treat employees like dirt?

I've worked for several large companies before, but not one of them was this brutal and hostile towards the employee.

I'm shocked there were people who chose to stay when they were given a chance to get out...

You dredge up a post from 5 years ago to say this? You obviously haven't worked for companies that treat their employees way worse (go check out the AT&T board). There is is plenty of room for advancement in this company depending on what business unit you are in. Many areas (back office and IT) are being outsourced to bare bones, so pickings are slim, but that is also not unique to Vz. Good luck with that lawsuit. Nothing like padding the pockets of lawyers. You'd be better served by looking for a job where you are happier, if there is one.

Verizon is easily the worst company that I have ever worked for. Unless you are an Indian person there is no opportunity for advancement. The corruption was so overt within my team that I plan to sue Verizon for a number of reasons.

Been with Big Red for almost 6 years. Have had 2 terrible managers. That’s not VZ’s fault, it’s theirs (the mgrs) for ruining a great opportunity to help mold VZ into a great place to work. I love working for the company and I have a great path ahead; it is truly a place where you make your career what you want it to be.

To be fair, in my area at least, a lot of the new hires are very professional, respectful, and more willing to do their jobs and help make your job easier, than what I had previously been accustomed to. I think things are changing for the better in that regard as the seedier misfits are weeded out.

I’ve mostly only worked here but know people from many other companies.

Everywhere s---s for workers some companies just put a better shine on it. I’ve been in half a dozen groups and some are a lot better than others much of it came down to coworkers and supervisor nothing else really had an effect. Hans, Lowell, Ivan or Chuck and even HR can do or say whatever it really doesn’t affect my job.

If you got another job, then you didn’t retire ten years early. Just saying.

Before Verizon, there was Worldcom which, as a young female in a male dominated (mostly ex-military, at that) NOC environment in the late 90's/early 2000's, I never felt taken care of. During swing shift, I was backed into a janitor closet by a coworker, propositioned in breakrooms by other coworkers, called plenty of nicknames -- not cat called -- some of these guys were my friends, it wasn't a completely hostile environment, but looking back now, in 2019 and being 40 with a daughter, I would NEVER want her to have to deal with that at her WORK! Not one person there cared about s-xual harassment policies, and I had to go to HR 4 TIMES at the age of 21 before they took me serious enough to even move me to another Managed Services team b/c my boss was blatantly hitting on me in front of my coworkers too much. And, when I finally got laid off from MCI after Worldcom went under, that same boss blacklisted me from ever working there again, which I'm sure means that I also can't ever try to get a job at Verizon either. All for not taking on his requests to go to dinner with him when he was supposed to be having dinner with his wife and kids. The fact that his senior management saw this and never did anything about this and decided not to do anything about it absolutely disgusts me. Also, I've worked for AT&T twice in my 20 year IT career, and they do a ton of shady stuff with payroll. Between getting hired from a consultant to an FTE, they hired me an hour before my contract expired, knowing that wasn't going to give me a chance to negotiate...which I knew was going to happen -- b/c I had several associates warn me that was the exact process they went through. Total b---s---. Also, they tried sneaking around screwing up a bonus check and my salary both times I was on maternity leave. I do not believe they are incapable. I fully believe HR was told by executive management to purposefully make these "mistakes" and assume employees aren't going to catch them.

Hey Wallmark guy. Took VSP at 60 weeks and got another job. I guess I should thank Verizon for allowing me to pay off my house and allow me to retire 10 years sooner than planned, but the reality is the leadership stinks and so does the culture.

So thanks for the all caps, misspelled statement. You are one of the VZ tards I am so happy to leave behind.

I'm in IT. Been in IT a long time. I would not describe my environment as brutal or hostile. Like other areas of the business, there are some bad leaders, but overall, I've enjoyed my tenure here. I did turn down a rebadge as I have no desire to work in a sweat shop (pooled resources Infosys). I'll be retiring in lieu of. It's been a good run. Paid for my house, paid for school, educated my kids, allowed me to work from home for years. The company got what they paid for right up until they "sold" my job. I don't take it personally. I was productive, but cost too much. Most of the pressure I felt was placed on myself, not by my management. The timing is right for me to go. No regrets. I'm sorry for those of you who are unhappy in your job. I would not have stayed if I were unhappy. Life is too short people. Go elsewhere and find something fulfilling.

Sounds like whoever wrote this works in IT. Described perfectly the 2.0 operating model the leader subscribes to.

This company is in a rat race with Comcast - trying to become the most hated company in America. The culture is horrid and yes, the company completely manipulated the survey results. Verizon doesn't have the right leadership to care about employees or customers. All that will ever be important to these folks is money.

I think it depends on what part of the country you are in. In thr north east it s---s! It is brutal ..and it's thr culture so applying for another position won't even help... it's the overall culture that is bad! They claim that customers and employees are their top priorities but they don't care about either one at all they only care about the shareholders… Look at how they manipulated the results of the survey that they did a couple weeks ago...there is jo way that 70% is good and the employees are eating Verizon in the 80s on all those questions... they only hear what they want to hear! I dont know 1 person that reports to the same director in my channel who is happy and likes their job!

I've not had this problem. I've worked for this company for over 30 years and have only ever had one boss in all that time that I really didn't care for. But even then, they were not "hostile" or "brutal". You can always apply for a different job or leave altogether. No one is holding you hostage.
