Thread regarding Anadarko Petroleum Corp. layoffs

I MATTER AT ANADARKO

I built a great team. I put in long hours. I contributed significantly to the bottom line. I networked within the company and outside the company to make a name for myself. My contributions were recognized and rewarded. I love what I do. It defines me.

My dedication to my job was at a cost to my family. This cost me dearly personally and financially. Those years are gone. Those relationships can't be restored. That money is gone too. I alienated a lot of people along the way.

I look at all my memos and spreadsheets and slide decks with fondness like I am looking at baby pictures of my children.

I will not get a lateral position at either Oxy or CVX, those are few and far between. In a few months, I will be unemployed, not as rich as you might think, my network dispersed. And my life's work will be thrown into a dumpster. Without Anadarko, I have no legacy. I work, therefore I am. Soon it will be as if I never was.

You people at APC all got screwed today when CVX announced will no longer pursue the purchase. Many of you will pay by being laid off to offset OXY’s high premium. Those of you who get absorbed into OXY will know how unlucky you were. OXY is an awful place to work compared to Chevron. If you can afford to retire now, do it, and walk away with that bonus severance check and other perks, like 6 months of COBRA subsidized medical and 6 months of unemployment benefits.

No one matters at a large corporation, you are simply trading your time for money.

Go build something on your own or go be a worker bee somewhere else

Right. You matter at Anadarko. Anadarko is gone so you don't matter any more. Dweeb.

I have heard, read and seen this story so many times... Family and Faith should be everybody's priority. People usually regret having their priorities wrong at the end of their productive life. Hope you share your story with as many people as you can so they learn from it.

My heart goes out to you. I hope you still retain pride in yourself and the work you did. That is valuable, too.

When you die, someone picks through your stuff and throws the rest away. In Fifty years, no one will even remember your name. When you leave your job, nobody will look with loving pride at that memo you wrote. It's kind of twisted that you do it. When the company goes out of business, it all gets undone. Better that you understand now the utter meaninglessness of our existences.

Had your priorities wrong from the start. A job should not define you, and never should you let it take away from your family at the extent you let it. Look in the mirror and realize it is on you. Learn from this and never put a company first. Those days are long gone, and have been for the last 20 plus years.

Oh please. The APC arrogance has been pathetic for years. The company only when to greatness in 2007 to 2012. During that time, the EC started putting incompetent people in place at senior levels and it was inevitable the place would crumble as the best of the best all left in 2013. What was left from the EC down was nothing but overpomoted over paid cronies who were incompetent. To read this sad song makes my stomach turn. It should be embarrassing to the EC and the APC employees to read how this deal was done - and now the APC leadership looks now like clowns. There won’t be many people feeling sorry for APC employees with the bloated severance that has been promised at the expense of the shareholders.

Post describes my manager. Except for the reflection. He's a soulless, borderline autistic, oily weasel. His "great team" pretty much uniformly loathe him. F--- him. Take his life's work and cram it down the sh--ter with a plunger the size of his ego. He represents what went wrong with Anadarko. That's why RAW's rewards flowed to him.

If somehow Chevron takes over, you will likely still be employed, probably at a better job, as were most were who were bought out before you ( I know from my own experience). Do not despair , whatever the outcome you will succeed.

If this is a serious post, and if indeed you lose your position in the takeover, be assured that after spending some time at home with your family, you will realize that you were not defined by those spreadsheets and slide decks. You will discover your true self and what really matters in life.
