Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The ‘AT&T’ business model

The future is contractors to design it, contractors to build it, eventually contractors to splice it and turn it up. Contract with the low bidder, greatly reduce overhead slashing jobs and ruining families, no liability, no giving a damn, reward executives with multimillion dollar bonuses and raise consumer prices. The ‘AT&T’ business model!

Post ID: @YMPZTYF-1ciz: You are right, and I don't owe At&T squat. I'm going to take my 900 G and my retirement benefits and bounce. Later, sorry you will never have that chance. Keep clawing your way up that corporate tree.

AT&T is about shake some limbs and a lot dead wood is going to hit the ground.

The problem with using contractors is this:

The first time around, your contractors will do the job for what seems to be a really good price. ( Look at all the money we save by using contractors ! Yeah, buddy ! We can't fire our employees fast enough. )

Once you get rid of all your employees and switch fully over to contractors, then it starts to play out a little bit differently.

Only during the next contract or perhaps the one after that will the company realize their mistake and, all of a sudden, their cheap contract labor becomes anything but.

The bid to do the same work jumps considerably and, as a company, you are now in trouble because you fired or laid off all your expertise in order to bring in, what you thought was, cheap contract labor.

Now what do you do ?

At this point, you don't control anything. You're at the mercy of the contractors because, since you burned down those bridges with your employees, you certainly can't rely on them to bail you out. If you ask them to come back, even with increased pay, they're simply going to laugh at you because:

Who, in their right mind, would want to work in this type of atmosphere ever again ?

Remember the old adage: " You reap what you sow. "

Love it how you lemmings vote down the comments that are the new reality. AT&T owes you nothing. If you think you’re going to retire in-place, you’re horribly mistaken.

@bmj

..true! It's not T's job to give us all a job. It's T's job to operate their business as efficiently as possible, be it 10 or 10,000 jobs. Hopefully T will consider the incomparable value of US based customer support/sales call centers and quality union grade craft work. These 2, although more expensive on the front end pay more dividends in the long run.

Almost 300 Int'l jobs on AT&T Career net this week and most are in India or Slovik countries....Yes life will go on and the earth will keep turning but the work will be out sourced of US and more Americans will be out of a job and looking for work.....Corporate greed plain and simple...….

This post has nothing to do with the CWA. Wake up people, if you are not a VP or above they don’t give a damn about you whether you are union or management!

The Company (Pacific Bell) in the mid 80’s had projected s goal to have Contractors do the bulk of the work and would babe skeleton crews (Pacific Bell Employee’s) to handle hot/rush work and emergency restorals. Now 35yrs later it is within fruition. AT&T has 2020 as the demarcation of the new way of doing business. 2019 is the first step to clear the non essential headcount whether it be Lower Management or Craft. 2020 will be the scorching of the Earth. After that they will let attrition take care of the rest. People will leave and not be replaced. Like now. Hang in there if you can. Good luck.

I resigned from the CWA 18 years ago when one of our stewards fell asleep during a grievance meeting. I have never regretted it. CWA= Can't Work Again

Didn’t the CWA once publish a story to show the gap widen between the middle class and the 3 percentages? I believe it was said that the 3 percenters hold 90% of the wealth in the US?

I have to disagree with some of your points. The work will still need to be done. Those equipped and willing, will do it.

As a shareholder, and as an employee, I see the need for at&t to eliminate as much duplication, waste, and unnecessary expense as possible. I am doing the same job as 6 others. We can’t talk to each other. Yet, we are stepping over each other.

Better than 40% of the employees can go (I may be one of them) and this company will do much better than it is today.

I’m sorry for your situation. I truly am. But we have been informed that this day is coming for many years now. Life will go on, and the earth will keep turning.
