Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I think Randy will pull this off

It is not about customer satisfaction. It is about profit. Shareholder value. Those of us that have always prided ourselves in taking care of each and every customer really have no place in the modern At&t, WE are dinosaurs, We have so many customers that we can afford to piss a few million off. Not about customer service, never will be.

Contractors, for the most part, are not the answer. What is the sole purpose of a contractor...to extend their contract. Contractors have very little investment in the work the perform. If something doesn’t work, who cares. A good contractor, costs as much or more as an avg employee. One of the big problems...no one understands the end to end picture of any platform in att. Everything is siloed, everyone is simply responsible for their little box. The fact that no one can connect the boxes, is no one’s responsibility.

"AT&T is hardly destroying careers.

4th Quarter 2018 headcount¹ : 268,220

1st Quarter 2019 headcount² : 262,290

5930 reduction in 1st quarter."

I guess the $200 Million in bonuses that Randy passed out was good? The only down side was the layoffs that ensued or did you forget that?

https://www.newsweek.com/christmas-att-layoffs-midwest-bonuses-trump-758391

Your vile fake news comment is laughable at best since it seems to come right out of Donald Trumps a$$. Evidense is in your face yet you continue.

Look at the company's history and get back to me. Oh and why not read this too, corporate guy : https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/01/att-reportedly-plans-layoffs-despite-tax-cut-and-fcc-deregulation/

"AT&T "eliminated 10,700 union jobs across its business" in 2018...

AT&T in November 2017 promised to "invest an additional $1 billion" in exchange for the corporate tax break that was finalized by Congress and President Trump quickly thereafter. But AT&T then began "instituting an unprecedented massive layoff of employees," the CWA said in late December 2017.

I suppose " Career Destroying " is a matter of perspective.

Your career with AT&T is over after they tell you they don't need you anymore after 20+ years of service because your reporting location ( which they dictated ) doesn't jive with their new " plan ".

Your career with AT&T is just starting if you're the contractor hired to replace the very same AT&T employee above who just got let go. ( Yes, it's happening. Am seeing it first hand. )

I was part of the surplus and off payroll 3/29, took what I had in my pension and 401K and per my fiduciary I got out of all ATT stock. Word in on the Street they are not happy with the leadership.

OP Post ID: @YLjndny-tlz. AT&T is hardly destroying careers.

Maybe you’re right. Maybe AT&T is not destroying careers offshore where a foreign colleague will do your job for 1/4 of the equivalent US salary. And where social welfare offshore for medical and retirement may be much less expensive.

I’m afraid that the numbers in your SEC references do not reflect the possibility of a surplus of 20,000 US employees and replacing those employees with offshore employees.

What really concerns me in your references is the revenue from the investment made in Mexico. Who made that decision to purchase Iusacell for $2.5B and later Nextel Mexico for $1.9B in 2015? The return on that investment in December 2018 was only $7,652 ????

Help me figure this one out, please. I keep rubbing my eyes because I must be missing something.

Head count includes off shore contractors and whoever else Randy wants to use to pad the numbers. I suspect he counts his dogs as part of that total.

Head count does not mean US jobs.

Head count does not mean family supporting wages.

Head count does not mean good benefits.

Head count does not mean stable employment.

OP whatever Randy is giving you to smoke keep smoking it because it must be pretty good.

When you make decisions like buying mcafee for unix servers the problem is deeper than what Randy can pull off.

There is no innovation. There is no faith in the employees except for those they keep who think they can automate or buy mcafee. They have the attitude that they can buy any product to support their company and just pass the cost onto the customer. Well pretty soon there will be no customers because the customers will leave by the way they are treated.

The only way they can keep customers is by a monopoly. Pretty hard to mess that up. So they will just keep buying companies and filling the government pockets to keep their business model.

It is the microsoft business model (buying the competition - like they tried to do with T-mobile and trust they will try again when the time is right). When a better technology comes along just buy it from the money you made from your government issued monopoly. Then just take that better tech and make in unavailable to the customers.

They talk about open source but their actions say something other. They only want to use open source when it benefits them.

My Question for At&t's future is "Will they have enough $$CASH$$ to feed the Beast?

1) Will they have enough $$CASH$$ maintain the dividend?

2) Will they have enough $$CASH$$ to pay down the debt?

3) Will they have enough $$CASH$$ to grow their business?

Employees are not a part of the equation. At&t will move to a Vendor/Contractor/Automation model with very very few employees.

AT&T is hardly destroying careers.

4th Quarter 2018 headcount¹ : 268,220

1st Quarter 2019 headcount² : 262,290

5930 reduction in 1st quarter.

¹ https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/732717/000119312519045608/d705958dex13.htm

² https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/732717/000073271719000011/ex99_2.htm

The data doesn't lie. Now certainly, the reductions could be layoffs, but they could be resignations, retirements, or buyouts. And it's offset by (gasp) hiring.

There is a fake news component present on this site. What did I see previously, a "40,000" employee layoff post?

There is a measured reduction happening, tempered by buyouts, perhaps with the exception of the Prem Tech title, which was a title to expand Uverse while the buildout ensued. I see an end to that buildout in July per the earnings report.

Even if AT&T eventually became the poster child of shareholder dreams, doing so by destroying the lives / careers of your workforce is about as immoral as it gets.

Reaching the top is only half the equation. HOW you get there is what differentiates a respected Company from one that is universally loathed.

The money comes from the customers, it does not magically appear because Randy wants it to.

If there is any angle which Randy is good at it, is getting the taxpayers money through government contracts.

call in to change your service or your bill and this statement is obvious.

Given the stock price, I think the jury is out on whether Randy will pull this off. And what does he have to pull off? Get rid of 20th century technology landline phone and sell 21st century technology wireless phone.

But, as far as the 21st century technology is concerned, the customer satisfaction is being attempted, such as AT&T Ready to Go.

https://www.rcrwireless.com/20190415/analyst-angle/kagan-att-ready-to-go

As far as the 20th century technology is concerned, to paraphrase Danny DeVito, it's dead. It's time to give it a decent burial and move on.

Wow! Isn't that the spirit that causes customer churn. You must be in "leadership". Or, this is a sarcastic comment that is even more than my capacity for such humor.
