Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why don’t they just decide what are they gonna do with DirecTV?

One thing is for sure, things can’t stay the way they are now, not with this kind of decline of business and the decline of customers to this degree. There are many options, the selloff of DTV, a reorganization, merging it with WM, dismantling it under the T roof… Why don’t they just decide what are they going to do with DTV. The worst scenario is to do nothing and let DTV “bleed” the rest of the customers. Not to mention stresing out the workers that are uncertain about their fate.

Folks its called buying the competition and tearing it to shreds.

It is what microsoft has been doing for years.

It's the new harvard business model.

They are doing exactly what they planned.

DTV keeps sinking AT&T and they don't know what to do. Mr. Stankey is the person responsible for this mess. But he dumped DTV on someone else and moved on to other things to make bigger messes. The board needs to fire the CEO and the rest of the leadership team for mismanagement. Hardworking AT&T employees and AT&T customers deserve better.

I imagine most these people using DirecTV don't have access to Cable TV where they live. One reason this seems likely is they probably also want high speed internet, and if they were getting that through a wire, they'd also just get TV over the wire too. I doubt it will be so easy for many to just disconnect even if the price goes up.

"we can still have customers for another 8 to 10 years ..."

I bet you are management.... think and talk like true believer. I remember a VP who once said that all the customer losses are part of the "business plan". Yeah, that worked well.... If a real competitor will come in the market today with a decent price for streaming, all those 8-10 years are out the door. And the competitors are eroding those 10 years faster than you think.

Do the math - DTV still has a few more years of life left. Sure, we lost 544,000 customers over three months - that's a mere 6044 customers a day.

But, according to questionable sources online, we still have anywhere between 17.5 million and 22.5 million customers of our IEFS Video Services.

Which could mean that if the rate of defection holds steady, we can still have customers for another 8 to 10 years before the last little old lady on a farm in Iowa dies.

Plenty of time left to panic people. Settle down.

I wonder if Osprey is postponed due to the debt? Don't remember seeing anything about it in a while. IIRC, it should be out by now.

That seems like a big part of our problem. They make huge decisions on the fly with an ever changing, flavor of the month strategy. The plan seems to be to stream DTV over the new box, but that may change too.

Looking at the report, year over year revenues for "Video entertainment" fell 1.8%.

Meanwhile, year over year revenues for "Legacy voice and data services" fell 15.3%.

They break out the revenues, but not the contribution to earnings. But I think it is landline that is or below breakeven. And that is where they have headcount issues that are yet to be resolved.
