Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

There is life (and work) after Verizon

The job market is pretty good from my experience. I was RIF'd about a year ago and I was able to choose from three separate job offers once I started looking. And I am 56 years old. I did keep current with skills and did my best to display a good attitude. I am very happy with the job I accepted, been in it about 6 months. Less stress from my VZ days, pay is comparatable, insurance almost as good, but the rest of the benefit package is excellent. I loved my years at VZ, but there are very good opportunities after VZ.

Thought this needed to be bumped up for more people to see. We need some positivity here. Original poster is @YHntsIW-pux.

This has definitely not been my experience. I'm in my late 50s and having a hard time even getting an interview (15+ years with multiple Cisco certs).

I am 57 year old female, back in IT at a great company, but making 23% less. But happy for ongoing bennies, and the prospect of working again on a great team, where many are around my age.

Original Poster (OP): Southeast USA = VZ's Atlanta, GA or VZ's Tampa, FL?

I am happy for you. The experiences I have discern are not favorable in criterion to compensation, employee benefits, most important 401k plan, also important employer match.

Forgone is the annual VZ 90% - 110% bonus...........

None of the people I know who left have gotten a paying job. For those longer back I’d they quit most are happy with their new job which they knew from the start was better. All the ones riffed are miserable unless they were right near retirement and most don’t have a full time job.

50? That must vary it seems to go down to 30 in some fields or at leaf with current hiring only wanting college grads with no experience.

OP, in response to your post:

My poor ex-boss got a job he hates with an outfit that doesn’t require a HS degree, and he gets paid a lot less money.

As far as these “other telecom companies” you’re referring to, what ones are expanding and hiring?

As for the tip you requested: don’t leave unless

you have something to offer and are younger than the dreaded 50 cutoff, or

you are financially prepared to be fully retired, without needing employment, or

you have a spouse who can carry the burden on their lone income, or

you’re close to SS and Medicare, or

you’re on your way out.

I am the original poster, answering a few questions I saw from this repost. I am female in southeast area. I had worked in VZ I.T. and that did seem to make a good impression at my interviews. However, the job I accepted is not in I.T. but I am using skills and experience I acquired from my years at VZ. People are being hired regardless of age or s-x. Most on my old VZ team who were RIF'd with me have all secured jobs. We were all over 50. Some preferred to stay in I.T. field, others chose to do something different. Your experience at VZ will be impressive with interviewers. Keep an excitement and great attitude about yourself and be open to opportunities you never knew existed! Stay positive and Best of luck!

thanks pux. I am 58 years old and I haven't even started looking yet, but I'm getting a lot of hits on my resume. I'm just taking time off to relax a bit before I go back. I do live in an area where the job market is good so I'm blessed.
