Understand not being able to get a lot of the newer stuff in a timely manner but should be no reason for that to happen with the older technology that is being replaced if there is a occasion to use some of that. Of course with all the downsizing no people to go out and pull equipment, for reuse, that will never be used again. Would be interesting to see how much inventory on the books that can be decommissioned instead of being maintained for the just in case scenarios.

having equipment around means money wasted to the accountant in charge. who needs it when your company is perfect and nothing ever breaks.

It's only a matter of time. I was dumped in California after working for Verizon for 24 years. Frontier required us to apply for our jobs and we were hired with ZERO service. All the past years lost. Only people who were able to reach minimum retirement age kept their Verizon pension money for future payment.
Wake up! ATT is not making any attempt to use any technology except Cell equipment. Vey soon they will dump all the CO's and go total wireless and wireless video. Verizon is also doing the same thing. Some of these states where Verizon had wireline were quietly dumped. Both companies kept a few CO's in each state to manage the cell systems.

Checking for old circuits and even the large number of old servers is trivial technically, at least in a company that is staffed with good technical people, like we used to be.
Our record keeping s---s. Remember Donovan being told they we were finding circuits that we had purchased out of region and we were purchasing more because we weren’t aware of their existence. The silos also aren’t very good at sharing info. Wonder how many alarms are being generated on empty facilities for example.
In the Midwest, many of the central offices are being downsized. They are breaking the dips and retiring the spare pairs. So it’s happening as we speak!
