Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Core techs will be gone along with prem techs

Just a matter of years. At&t will eventually be a pure wireless company. 5g, along with air-gig, will enable them to deliver gigabit speeds into even remote rural homes delivering everything. If a home or business has power, then air- gig and 5g can deliver. As their penetration increases, core decreases. Eventually it’ll get to the tipping point where they can easily sub out old core work. Or just sell that portion of the business off entirely. At&t won’t need to own all the plant it does now. Not even the backbone. They can sell it and lease it back as needed like many other companies do. This is Randall’s dream. To have a small a workforce as possible. Means more money in shareholder pockets.

Excellent point by @YDcLW4q-1boz.

By the end of the year Core will absorb Prem techs. At that point it is the Union's job to get these youngin's into our contract. They get 30% less Per Deim then a Core Tech....ARE THEY 30% LESS A HUMAN THEN A CORE TECH??????

Prem Tech lives Matter!!!

I was a wiretech that left almost a year ago and yes, it was for the best. Have both wt & core friends still in touch and all agree the company is going downhill fast. At one time we were all a team, but from the outside looking in now, it's easy to see the viciousness towards one another and that's exactly what the company wants. Both wt & core have one hail mary left. Join forces and fight back against the top teir tyranny, or fade into oblivion. The choice is yours. While I remain hopeful for those friends still stuck in the trenches, I also tend to think the company will do as they please knowing full well the CWA will sit idly by with little more than a peep.

When you are not offering or selling products that required prem tech's, you don't need prem tech's.

My last order to upgrade internet, resulted in an old I&R guy. There is no union protection for anyone anymore.

Apparently the consensus is that the younger folks (either core / prem tech) needs to find a way to get rid of the senior old lazy crazy bipolar irresponsible selfish uneducated mediocre ( either core / prem tech) one way or another. And in the process do the same to the 1st that permits this sh-- from happening.

If you are a bad apple with seniority it takes a act of God to get rid of them. Over the years have seen too many great young employees get displaced because of their seniority. At least in the old environment most could find a place to land and still be a asset to the company. Theses days that is doubtful.

To the OP, you are correct. But you have to remember that the CWA put in the contract Appendex J. It pretty much says that Prem Techs get no protection. Not a good thing and nothing that I voted for when it started. I really think that the Prem Techs got a raw deal and there are some awesome Prem Techs and Core Techs. Unfortunately there are a lot of bad apples representing both. But that is what happens when CWA doesn't want to treat every employee the same. Does it s---? You bet. Can we do anything to change that? Nope. Too far gone and AT&T is continuing on a downfall. They can't get out of debt but yet they profit Billions of dollars a quarter. And they are farther behind on technology than everyone else.

Kind of hard to put AirGig to work without actual aerial power lines. A lot of electricity is being deployed underground. And who is going to buy facilities that are depleted of customers? The companies that have undertaken that endeavor recently are fighting bankruptcy.

@YEHdbwV-nur The problem is our temp employee's were sold on a notion they would be the premier tech of the future. That didn't work out, so they're bitter.

Prems & Core, I mean really? Watching both sides belittle each other, and for what? To what end? What is proven and what gets accomplished? But I apologize, I interrupted your little thin skinned playground fight!

Please, by all means, continue....but keep in mind, the adults in the room have a very, very short attention span, oops.....we’re gone!

Core techs are perfect. One came into my grammas house a week ago smelling like c-gare--es and fish guts. Didn’t want to move her 10 pound night stand to check for dial tone. Told her to call the 800 number for a prem tech to do it.

That’s our “permanent” workforce. Rethink possible!

The constant backlash is due to your prideful arrogance on always wanting to remind how superior your guys are. God have mercy and pretty sure you guys have no idea what's coming down the pipe. So stop all your speculation and stop belittling others who are trying to make a living on our poverty stricken wage....(we are surviving)
