Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Midwest Premtechs you are being sold out

Union is taking care of core and company is continuing to shift work to core. Merla is all for core. No one is working to save your job prem techs. Your numbers won’t matter at the end of the year.

Huber seems to be winning the battle as far as protecting his workforce as much as possible. Prem work, CO work, etc. Not saying that Core won’t see surpluses but every effort is being made to shift Legacy work to his group. Our VP mentioned the strategy of single dispatches. Not only single dispatches but the techs being totally self sufficient. Very little calling other groups for help. Those SVP meetings have to be interesting.

Funny talk about lazy and bad service to the customers! A lot of PTs don’t run new cat five put service on a old IW and then we get the repair tkts to fix this c-ap work! Leave single Pr drops because they are too lazy to climb a pole. Even seen guys run a 4 foot piece of cat 5 under the house tapped in the old IW just to make it look like he did something!

Aerial splices? they cannot run a jumper correctly!

Look some are better than others and are nice guys but stuck in dead end temp.jobs. 90% will be gone soon...before you preemies slam core bla bla I am aware of the outside techs going the way of the dinosaur..nobody is blind ..but this will happen gradually.

If a prem tech can get a pit dug and go into a buried splice for a repair the company may keep them around awhile. Prems need to learn how to go into aerial splices also.

You’re all wrong. Core techs will be gone along with prem techs. Just a matter of years. At&t will eventually be a pure wireless company. 5g, along with air-gig, will enable them to deliver gigabit speeds into even remote rural homes delivering everything. If a home or business has power, then air- gig and 5g can deliver. As their penetration increases, core decreases. Eventually it’ll get to the tipping point where they can easily sub out old core work. Or just sell that portion of the business off entirely. At&t won’t need to own all the plant it does now. Not even the backbone. They can sell it and lease it back as needed like many other companies do. This is Randall’s dream. To have a small a workforce as possible. Means more money in shareholder pockets.

Company has no interest in the union and working with and pretty sure most people dislike union as well. Union is just a bunch of bullies trying to push thier agenda and liberal views on others. News flash I'm pretty sure no one is as protected as you all seem to think while your thumping your chest because your core making the big bucks. Your big bucks and always thinking you deserve more of the ridiculous pay is one of the reasons we are where we are today. Over paid period.

This line made me laugh: "“Core” technicians have the experience, tools and equipment required to complete simple single and bonded pair Internet installations in a more timely manner".

The old core techs will spend an hour running the jumpers, an hour getting to the prem, have zero customer service, spend another hour chasing IW, leave the lines with inside tap because they realize they don't go in attics, leave without explaining anything to the customer, go sit in their dirty truck for another 2 hours while watching their oldies shows and laughing about the millennials.

Fix your own pair instead of kicking it to Ii&r. Contract means nothing anymore. Do what's best for you!

All these posts by who I am assuming are core techs justifying what is being done to prem techs just proves that our so called “brothers and sisters” use the job title as nothing more than a bargaining chip to advance their group. Don’t fall for this union strong b---s--- that they try to feed you because in the end they are only union strong when it benefits them. I’ll bet your core stewards and elected leadership are feeding you some sh-- about how you want work to be shifted to core and how they might move people up. Truth is sacrificing you will better the group they are really fighting for and keep those higher pay rate dues flowing.

Core techs don’t care about you. Stop sending work to them and start speaking up when you go behind them on dogshit work.

Prem tech side have zero job protection....Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who is the easiest to let go? Just saying

The only reason Core can do it quicker is because they are not required to use cat5 and can install on quad. A wire tech would be written up for doing that.

There is not enough "core" to do all the work. And I hope the rest of the midwest "core" guys and gals aren't like the ones in Milwaukee and Madison. Hack work, lazy. Went to a bonded pair upgrade that a core tech had jepped the previous day. Left cx out of service, only needed a pair change. He told the customer he was to scared to climb up the pole in the wind. I just do their work now, I don't give a ****. I am here to do a job, that includes getting the customer in service or repaired and that's what I do.

The premise technician title was created and sold to the “core” members as a term position lasting no less than one year and no more than three. The union members agreed to this in order to kickstart the new uverse service. Over the course of the last ten years much has been learned by the company. To your point shifting the work to traditional phone company employees has illustrated that indeed isolating premises technicians from long standing training and work practices has failed. “Core” technicians have the experience, tools and equipment required to complete simple single and bonded pair Internet installations in a more timely manner. It’s not my opinion it’s simple facts or numbers to use a company phrase, that has allowed this to continue to grow. Yes George Merla is trying to get all the work he can for his group. The internet installations on fiber are next. Don’t blame the union or the company the gap in knowledge, training and experience is to great to bridge for the enormous number of prem techs that exist. Most will go and some will stay. Those who stay will start from scratch and learn from the ground up.
