Last week our manager stopped giving us new assignments and our workload dropped by, I’m guessing, at least 60%. To be fair this has been known to happen before, but given the current situation at the company this is making me worry. Could that be an indication that we are getting laid off ? Has anybody faced anything similar?

There is no funding available for new work/projects....minimal for the rest of year and all are wondering what to charge to when projects end and there is no new work....a very dismal situation...not all employees are pulling their weight, leaving a few to carry for others. I guess who can concentrate with surplus calls every month and we keep seeing colleagues laid off.....Ironically a good majority targeted are some of the more astute employees.....leaving all to wonder...W.T.F
@edz, I was surplussed just over two years ago and the notification came as an email to expect a morning call....I was fortunate to fight my way back in through my past contacts and networking. Too old to search effectively for another job, too young to retire, this is why I chose to stay....that Age Ceiling.
Over the past few years this seems to be the method, and afternoon calls (or one on one talks with the manager) have been the “all clear.”

How will I know if I am to be surplussed? an email or a call? Thank you for any information. or maybe if I ignore things and go about business as usual I'll be forgotten.... LOL

Never know what mechanization is being put into place these days. Put some into our group. We had heard it was coming but not as soon as they put it into place. Only way we found out about it was during a testing phase they accidentally did the testing on the live work instead of the testing portal. That went over well.
Next managers lay-off 3/22.....would make sense!
In California our workload has increased. The targets are impossible... reminds me of this quote.... “We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, with so little, for so long, we are now qualified to do anything, with nothing.”
Michigan had layoffs on Friday. Everyone should be concerned. Our work force is disappearing.
