That 2nd point is in question. The profit derives from a lot of people purchasing the product. But now, they have this decaying infrastructure that might pass 9 houses before the 10th one buys the product. Same infrastructure, far less customers. And the government doesn't help, with all the taxes and fees on the service.

I suspect landline telephone is much closer to break-even, if not in the red. Their quarterly reports indicate the loss of landline customers, which in the last report was 17% year over year.

With email, instant messaging, cell phone, calling apps on the smart phone, landline telephone has gone the way of the switchboard operator, or stage coach and buggy whip.

Sad part of these posts are the justifications being used for the importance of the services . From needing a mechanism so that 3 year olds can remember one landline number to having the ability to call 911 (which I have never done in 55 years). Maintaining full fledged TV services to maintain the fabric of the family. I can almost hear good night John Boy after the group hug when a episode of Criminal Minds ends.

What’s the point in this post? Aren’t we supposed to be giving info on layoffs and not complaining about an outdated product?

You’d just tell the kid one cell phone number to give in the event of an emergency. You’re overthinking this way too much, not rocket science.

yeah senior management just complains about how unprofitable the land iine business is I wish they would get out of it and give it to someone who actually passes automation cost savings onto the customer instead of giving to the ceo's.

They cut costs on everything in delivering service but yet the bills keep going up. Not sure what they really want from the business and how much profit they think it should make so they should just get out of the business and give to a company who actually cares about the customers and employees.

After all people are streaming videos on their wireless phones nowadays anyway so why should it matter.

911 is not as bad as most including the government think. Most wireless calls are located within a couple feet, over 90% of the time. VOIP providers use the same database as pots providers.

“Outside on you cell calling 911” Obviously unlike you, most people don’t live their lives with cell phone in their hand or back pocket. Set it down for a couple days. It’ll be ok. Grab a snack pudding and capri sun and walk aound without cell. There is a thing called the eorld out there.

A great post but also taken out of context from the original conversation. So if I understand this correctly, you all work for ATT, but a positive mention of a product you sell, is grounds for a relentless attack on it. ATT sells landlines right? Are you AT T employees acting this way against one of the many successful products you have? Yes ATT has many successful products. Just remember, they have NEVER lost a dollar in any quarter. They may have made a few million or billion less hete and there, but have NEVER lost a dollar.

Cable companies don’t pay their techs as well and aren’t unionized. They have lower labor overhead.

Doesn’t AT&T also have VOIP around $20 with U-Verse?

Can’t wait for the big add a line promotion around Christmas so that parents can give their kids a landline for a present.

Guess the OP is willing for everyone that is responsible for the installation and maintenance of those landlines to accept the same pay and benefits package of the cable companies to help lower the costa.

Haven’t had a landline in my adult life, and no I do not live in my parents basement.

In the age of monthly bills for everything it’s just one thing I do not need or want and didn’t make the budget cut.

It doesn’t help that the only techs that do POTS work caps out at 40 bucks an hour. Not to mention the CO tech who has to wire it makes the same amount. Since prems are being disposed of won’t be long until broadband prices start their rapid climb in price.

Wow, do you also sit on the front porch and yell at kids to get off your lawn? Embrace technology, if your house is on fire, you should be outside on your cell safe and calling 911. As mentioned in other posts the $20 cable landlines are not dedicated lines, they are VOIP services. VOIP can fool 911 location if the supplier does not keep the address up to date.

Do your home work. Wireless landline and voip landline service is not a true landline. True Landlines allow you to call 911. Wireless technology allows consumers to have unlimited calling via a cellular sim card. Voip uses the internet to connect calls. NEITHER service is an adequate solution for medical devices, monitoring services, faxes, more importantly calling 911. 911 operators can not see your location. E911 services have not budgeted nor upgraded their equipment to support the voip nor sim technology. Maybe in 5-10 years.. Pay the $60.00 it's well worth it..

Your phone number is portable across carriers. No need for them to learn a new number as you swap.
