Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is anyone else thinking of taking the lump sum offer 3/31?

For me (age 59, 36 years service, mgmt) the enhanced lump sum offer that expires 3/31/19 works out to about 8 months pay (pretax) . Or stick around and be downsized in 2Q or 3Q and get the standard 6 month severance (taxable). I'm ready to move on. Seems like the 3/31 enhanced lump sum (without severance) is the best deal I'm going to get . What do you think?

T seems to be pushing the lump sum hard. Any thoughts on this..

I don't think it is just to get folks to leave as my last day is 3/29 and they keep reminding me that even though I am already laid off, don't forget about the 1 time lump sum option.

If you think you will make it 6 more months, you should then get 8 months pay as you get the 60 day warn time plus 6 months plus unemployment. Not sure if it buys you much more as you should qualify for company benefits. Yours seems a function of how bad do you want to leave and do you need to go back to work after T

For anyone wanting to take lump sum, this makes sense. The annuity option was not impacted by the interest rate change. Remember to be careful when investing this $ as the annuity is not tied to the stock market. I and is a safer "bet" for some. I did partial lump and annuity when I got smoked out in Feb. Consult a financial adviser to discuss all options

. Good luck

The irony of all these people with 15+ years homding on for a 6-month severance is that the younger employees with only enough time to earn a 1-2 month severance are encouraged to leave.

@beb What "extra lump sum"? There is no "extra lump sum".

I don't understand why this is being presented as an "either/ or" scenario? If you are management and you have a pension benefit and you are laid off., you are entitled to your vested pension benefit, and whatever severance you are entitled to under the management severance plan. The OP is referring to an "enhanced lump sum offer", which is not correct terminology as that is not being offered. I guess he is referring to the bone they threw, where they would give the lump sum pension payout based on last years interest rates (resulting in higher lump sum payout) vs. the slightly higher interest rates today, which would result in slightly lower lump sum payout after 3/31. I guess it boils down to whether or not you want to leave 6 months salary on the table (and people keep talking about the severance being "taxable" as if they're surprised...it's income, of course it's taxable), I'm not willing to leave the 6 months on the table personally, and I'm not too concerned about interest rates ticking up slightly possibly affecting my lump sum slightly some time down the road.

Well, if you are 'surplussed' in many jurisdictions you can claim Unemployment, if you 'quit' then you can't.

Quantitatively, if you can stand your work environment, hanging on till severance has better outcome. Even without severance, hanging on for another 6 months has better outcome. Lumpsum is pre-tax and compensation is post-tax. It is tricky how to compare (pre-tax, post-tax) in scenario A vs scenario B. The best way is to "assume" you convert Lumpsum to Roth (taxman would take 45-50%) and then looks at lumpsum-after-Roth + compensation for the scenario of 3/31 and sometime down the road.

Qualitatively, your life and your time really living it is priceless.

@Y5vaptR-rth Hate to be inform you of the bad news so early in the process but, this employer is as progressive as they get. T wasn't the only company to get the tax break, you did too. Now go sit at a union meeting and complain America is being run by a capitalist!

"For those of you employees who voted for Trump who got att their big tax break , I hope you’re happy. You’re probably next to be canned , but thanks for supporting the republican and company agenda."

this only shows what dumb a-- you are, President Trump, or any president of either party can only offer the opportunity to any company to do what we think would be the right thing for their employees. Just because your hero stinky screwed us over is not President Trump's fault. But you knew that didn't you? Facts just are not your friend are they?

For me, extra lump sum is better than 6 months.

Tough call. Only you can make that decision but I do agree they’d are probably not going to make you a better offer. Company has to give Randall another bonus after all. Amazing. Only at at&t can the CEO pay increase by millions despite costing the company 7 billion dollars in stock and spectrum after a failed takeover (t-mobile) and a merger that’s by most counts failed and bleeding subscribers (directv). Oh and now to pay off debt we’re going to do mass layoffs of those who actually helped build the company. For those of you employees who voted for Trump who got att their big tax break , I hope you’re happy. You’re probably next to be canned , but thanks for supporting the republican and company agenda.
