This is happening all over not just at&t, i have a friend who's an electrician union member and he says theyre laying them off all over, also happening to another friend in texas who is a teacher and he says its happening to teachers there too..

Unions are just big business nowadays. They take your dues and do little in return.
Worked rural area and the stewards were tough on both sides. Mgr screwed up and you knew the butt kicking was coming. However they were equal opportunity butt kickers. Tech wasn’t carrying his weight and they handled it. Never went beyond a meeting or two.
Here's the thing about the Union(s), from a guy that started as a Field Ops tech 20+ years ago before they were in the Mobility business, then became a new manager shortly before they got their tentacles into it. They are completely unnecessary. Management and the technicians interacted perfectly well in those days. There was a mutual respect, folks were fairly compensated and generally happy with their jobs. Over time, the Union slowly drove a wedge between the workforce and management. Embarassingly inarticulate and angry Union stewards and officers brought their backwards way of thinking from the landline into a new and exciting business, brainwashed the gullible and not so bright types, and gleefully collected their dues, all for naught. THEY DO NOTHING FOR YOU EXCEPT TAKE YOUR MONEY. WAKE THE HECK UP.
Of course we can’t compete with low wage countries but we can’t compete with a lot of companies here with our pay package on top of the worthless ones. However believe my crew would give them a run for their money if I could get rid of 2-3 of them.
Why pay $5 for an inferior product that's has some loud irritating union rep when you can get the same or better for the guy who's cheerfully willing to do it for $3 and provide better customer service.
Youre blaming unions for layoffs, instead of outsourcing in and out of country?
I would bet the Union spends 90% of their time with 10% of the members who to a large degree don’t deserve to be employed. Some groups with 20-30% attendance issues. Protecting their members. Time to start keeping slots for the 90% who come in doing a good job. Sad part is most of the 90% want to see them gone also.
The unions have been gone for years. I saw a bit of good in them. But when I was surplussed in Q4 of last year. I wasn't even contacted by them. I look at them now as a bunch of goons wanting your money to bargain and loose over and over again because corporate business is tied to politics and the government. So sad. They were so necessary years ago. Not they get minimal results with your money. I thought the CWA website poster of Randall was cute and funny. But ridiculous at the same time. Lots of truth to it. But it means nothing to anyone.
Well, the unions screwed themselves to the ceiling in the automotive industry. think Detroit autoworker making 100K working a factory line.... then the Japanese took over the auto market with far better quality cars AND lower prices in the 1980's. GM, Ford and Chrysler cars really had terrible terrible quality in 70's and 80's... Poor design AND poor build quality. Management didn't care money was rolling in and union members didn't care either... Did the same thing happen in telecom? you tell me.
Only 6.4% of private sector workers are union in 2019. What is this, 1950? That train left the station ages ago.
