I replied, in an earlier post, “The Age Ceiling is a very real, silent, invisible ceiling.” Invisible because any hiring manager, with half a wit, can read a résumé and determine your approx. age by your job experience....they won’t and, by law, can’t ask your age.
Currently Wikipedia has the youngest Boomer now at age 55 (Boomers were born between 1946-1964) 10 years from an AT&T Pension but 12 years from full Social Security retirement benefits, and if we are Surplussed, the older we are the more unlikely that perspective employer is to give us a second glance. Include the older Gen X’rs, near age 50, in that mix.
That first glance goes to an younger aged Gen Ex’r, but probably a Millennial....all skill sets being equal, experience is a fine thing to have but it takes a back seat to longevity and that’s just plain, honest economics and one that most employers practice, but in silence.
“Millennials that want us gone, in past and future layoffs, would be our chief competition in the next job(s) we apply for.....this is why we stick hard and turn a seemingly deaf ear.” For this, and many other reasons, we remain.
The irony, to say it out loud to a relatively younger T employee, (for the reasons mentioned) you’re one of the reasons we stay!
