Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Layoffs impacted the ones who got to stay too

Of course it’s horrible to lose your job and my heart goes to the affected colleagues and I’m not trying to minimise what they went through, but the one that are left are also impacted heavily. They are now a demoralised bunch of people who saw what happened and who now know that work ethics, ward work, walking the extra mile, experience and similar qualities count for nothing at AT&T.They are the people who will use every opportunity to find another job and people the people that don’t believe in the values the company preaches. Good luck for the management to try to motivate the workers who know that doing the bare minimum and giving it your best count the same in the eyes of the leadership.

I feel this exact way. I watched 5-6 highly ranked employees get cut for being out slide a CZ zone while several average at best employees got to stay because they are in a CZ. Our team is demoralized and down. Leadership doesn’t recognize or do anything to combat it. Most everyone hear is now trying to use the company to get their skills up to date so they can leave or be prepared for the next round of layoffs.

Been doing the minimum for years now. Why stress when it doesn’t pay to? I’ve never seen anyone apply hard work and dedication to get promoted, ever. It comes down to who upper management likes, not who busts their a--.

I stopped giving 100% about 2 years ago and just did enough to stay off the reports. I stopped giving at all the day I got my layoff notice. Hey, at least I am honest.

@OP

Your premise is wrong

It’s not horrible to loose your job at ATT

It may look so from the inside of that cave you’re now in, but there is light outside.

You need to detach yourself from the fear of loosing a job with sh--ty employer.

I go into the office everyday now. I see very good men and women who are glad to see me. They believe because of my level that I have answers. I do not. This is like going to funeral everyday.

A lot of the younger people I know no longer expect 30 years and a retirement watch because of the new paradigm. Basically hired mercenaries. Highest bidder gets their services until the next highest bidder comes around. Their retirement plan is to take the highest paid job so that they can fund their 401K which can be taken with them. Keep skills updated and wait for the next opportunity.

Will new employees hired after all the layoffs see T as simply a job for which they get paid and not have the baggage of current workers? Is that the new paradigm? Work for money; your health care, pension/401K is your own problem. So then will competition between companies force T to treat their employees better to retain them? Or will new employees say "pay for my service and you'll pay a lot?" So look at your job as if you're a new employee. They get work, you get paid. If you don't like what they ask of you, leave. No roots growing into the ground. Or, drink it up and hope as high as they what. I see it as a personal decision. If I don't like a place, I'll leave.

@ckx - idk which dtv leaders you’re referring to. The ones they brought over to our group have absolutely s---ed and are the biggest piece of sh-- managers I’ve ever seen. All they do is constantly demand more and threaten to fire anyone that doesn’t meet their unreasonable demands.

As one of those who made it thru I was devastated to see so many co-workers let go. They GUTTED Michigan. The way they did it was brutal. Telling us that it’s coming and then having to wait and worry for another 3 weeks to find out shows just how heartless att has become. I figure I’ve got until sometime in early 2020 at best, probably sooner. And quite honestly, I think I’ll be relieved when it’s my turn. Best wishes to all of those affected this round.

You folks need to look out for number one.

Divorce yourself emotionally from work-they care nothing about you, your family, your life.

Try to run them out of $$$.

Do a good job, no need to excel-it won't save you.

Fly low, do whatever ridiculous thing they ask.

Be polite, treat customers well.

Smile, wave, and cash the checks.

You're not on a team. You're not collaborating.

You are there for the biggest paycheck you can earn in the shortest amount of time.

For you don't trade labor for pay, but rather precious time. Your time.

T is no longer a career job.

Do what you need to do to take care of you and yours.

Retired 38 year tech.

F--- that. No I’m doing the minimum. Milk the cow. If they want to can you, they will find a reason. So why bother giving this sh--hole company your all? They will get 20% if that out of me... I give ZERO F---S!!!

The best workers are busy looking for better places of employment than this place. When all is said and done, Randall's fabulous media company will be left with only the worst, laziest, least creative workers who couldn't find a better job elsewhere.

This ship is sinking fast.

I have people on my team working more than 40 hours because they're overloaded. They're also probably too scared of losing their jobs to say no and just log off at 5:30 (and some of them aren't even FTEs). F--- that. I refuse to work unpaid overtime to make sure some rando with an MBA can look good for the boss.

And for some of us affected, we feel badly for those that will be left behind. Morale has s---ed for a long time and the cycle of despair just keeps getting greater and greater.

Work for your paycheck, but don't kill yourself for the company because in the end you are just a number on a spreadsheet keeping Randall, John, etc. from getting their big fat checks because of all the mistakes they have made. If you keel over from a heart attack or cancer, etc. they'll step on your body to get to the next person to do your job.

It's a shame, but I don't see any upside for those left behind because they will be next and anyone who doesn't believe that is delusional. So prepare yourself - don't be caught of guard. And if it works for you, maybe leave before they ask you to leave.

I've found no incentive to go the extra mile, be proactive, problem solve, or do anything outside of the bare minimum since AT&T bought DTV. Under DTV leadership, all of these traits were encourage and rewarded handsomely. AT&T is run like a giant kindergarten and there is a disincentive to do anything beyond what is required.
