Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is there any optimism about layoffs?

Are there any reasons to be optimistic about the layoffs? I honestly feel like reading this forum will just make people more anxious/stressed than the situation requires.

1) It's crazy that some people think ATT will lay off a third of their workforce by 2020. The company is not going to fire 80,000 people. Lmao.

2) TWC and HBO will make the company a lot of money

Any other "good" reasons we'll be alright?

Chill, people

I can't wait to see the carnage johnny puts upon TWC. they will apply their accounting principles and all the creativity will head on over to netflix or hulu. they already put down hbo and said they aren't profitable enough. lol

The grass is not always greener. It depends which group you work in and what you do. I have many options and have had 5 different companies reach out to me in the last 2 weeks, that is a little higher than the average for me over the last year. I choose to stay not because I don't have options but because I enjoy my work and the people I work with.

Politically I doubt if they can totally eliminate landline service. Too many rural customers and elderly that still use the service at this point Also don’t believe anyone would buy it after Frontier made that mistake with Verizon. However all of the spectrum they are putting into place (including rural areas through First Net) will ramp up the attrition of that service because of better coverage in a lot of places. How many people have a technician come out if their cell phone crashes? Toss in the fiber build and the subsequent elimination of technician dispatches. Interesting how a lot of this is happening simultaneously.

This isn't the first layoff. Since divestiture in 1984, there have been countless layoffs and reorgs. More seasoned employees from Pac-Bell, Bell South, SBC, Ameritech, have been living with this for decades. We've had to interview for our own jobs, state if we'd take a reduction in pay, go from a paid-OT policy to no paid-OT, descend from a time of "when you left work, you were off the clock" till you returned. Now we're connected and expected to be connected 24x7. All of this grinds in that it's like a marriage that's gone sour - you keep hoping for something good, but it never outweighs the harm already done. And the last ball to drop is to lose your job. This is absolutely no fun.

@clm, you said “this forum makes it seem like the sky is falling.” You come across as someone whose “sky” is safe and intact and void of any sense of empathy for the common T employee......perhaps you don’t have the overall financial responsibilities that most have.

I’m retired from T but have watched the mental carnage most everyone has been dealing with for several years which can best be described as “Battle Fatigue.” T has created a real life lottery, which happens 3-4 times a year, in that everyone waits for the hammer to fall, if they escape the Surplus, then the survivors hit the Reset for the next time....sometimes we actually envy those that get to move on.

Many have had to hit the reset far too many times as qualifications don’t seem to matter and no one knows what really does matter to management. The reality is that the company has bred the anger and contempt on these threads, Trolls are not easily tolerated and tolerance for those who make light of someone’s complicated life situations is not well received.

Too Randy I would say, do a Verizon like offer, give the battle weary ‘the end game’ to look forward too and reverse morale to the clouds....Let your employees make a dignified exit with an honorable Severance Pkg. and allow both sides to get what they want!

People need to be prepared for the worst. A lot of people have already lost their jobs, which can be a devastating negative life experience. Many more will lose there jobs before this is over.

This company has a very poor track record with companies they have acquired. Once AT&T management destroys worker morale with newly acquired businesses, they usually lose a lot of money,, DTV being the biggest example.

Media content companies like Time Warner require creative, independent mindsets in their employees. Adding AT&T's 19th century by the numbers micromangement to a (formerly) creative, motivated workforce is a recipe for failure.

There will be optimism when/if the AT&T board fires the CEO, all of his direct reports and their direct reports. These id--ts with stupid acquisitions ruined this company.

I think the amount of layoffs depends on whether AT&T can terminate offering landline telephone service. I think that is what the "2020" plan is dependent on. If they can, then the jobs supporting landline telephone would be gone.

From my understanding we were at around 280k employees total in 2015 when they decided by 2020 they wanted to be down to 220000 employees. By end of last year (not including TWC) we were down to around 235ish employees? So to hit original goals they need to get rid of 15k this year. January layoffs were rumored to be between 7-10k people through company. So at least one more round is coming if my information is correct.

Optimism for who?

If you are an upper exec who wants to max out his bonus for short term gain, you are optimistic.

If you work for a living and want a family wage and benefits, not much reason for optimism.

If you can get yourself out the door without getting reamed, then you will be smiling and optimistic about the future.

Just look at what Meg etc did at HPE. It is the same playbook and possibly McKinsey is behind it.

The layoff time frame for reducing the work force by 33% started at the end of 2015 when they introduced their Vision 2020 program. Many will be through attrition and also layoffs. They have laid off many thousands since then. I'm surprised that the OP doesn't understand this.

VISION 2020 started years ago. You should keep up with the times....unless of course you are very new.

I know what I'm getting into. But this forum makes it seem like the sky is falling.

Everything is far from fine, but people here make it seem like ATT is laying off 2000 jobs a day, and by 2020 there will be only 10,000 employees left.

It blows my mind that within 18 months people think ATT will reduce 80,000 jobs.
