Meat Team leads need to pick up a knife...

So long story short: during the restructuring about 5 years ago, the deli lead became my meat lead and he hasn't picked up a knife since. My manager keeps him around because he does a good job in deli, but that's not even his position! Very frustrating, especially since he will now be my human resource person. How am I supposed to respect someone or take orders from someone who won't even try to learn how to cut?! If corporate is happy, he takes the credit, and if they are mad it's our fault?! Sam's needs to take a hard look at the leads and managers who are coasting by, it's a joke!!

Why not answer my question? You seem to have a good understanding of what to do in the area you are in, so why don't you become the manager or team lead and change that?

As a cutter i dont need my team leader in cutting meat, and we have a good crew and are self sufficient. But the lead should know how to cut, in case of call ins or emergencies. Plus they will be a better lead, they'll know the ins amd outs of the dept so much better. Our manager knows nothing and it easy to pull the wool over his eyes...

Lead by example. Servant leadership. The company was founded upon that culture. It would be like if the TBC Lead couldn’t mount tires, the MSS Lead couldn’t operate a register, the Overnight Lead couldn’t drive a forklift. Zero respect earned for those types of “Leaders”.

To whoever said why should a lead know how to cut? You obviously know a good bit about the area if you know what fst so don't get mad because you are likely a guilty party. Just tracking numbers is pathetic. If someone calls off, you should be able to step in, and on busy holidays you should be able to pull your weight. The great part is that you hide behind the supervisor title, but one of these days it will catch up to you. The magnifying glass is on fresh right now, and they will see what a waste of payroll you are. That being said I'm sure there are plenty of leads right there in the trenches, but you clearly aren't one of them. But you go ahead and keep on collecting that paycheck while the real cutters get black belts and put you out of a job.

I’m case you haven’t heard their not leads, they are referred to as a manager. Pick up your big boy knife and start cutting. If you can’t work independently then go to carts.

Why should your lead know how to cut? That is your job. They are managing your business. They should be running you, not you them. You do fst, you cut what it tells you to cut, you go home. They should be helping run the counter, ordering, making sure you are on spec, tracking throws and reduced, adjusting fst, engaging members and driving their business.

You sound like you need a babysitter or a new job.

I'm right there with you. We just got a new lead who has zero experience in meat or deli, goes to "train" for two weeks and comes back to start telling us how to do our jobs. We have cutters who've been with Sam's for over 10 years. Our dweeb of a fresh manager didn't open the rec for anyone currently there to even have a shot at lead. She is also beyond clueless! If you're a "yes msn" then you're hired for the spot. Nobody likes this new guy and all he does is walk around acting like an Eminem reincarnation. He then makes us stop what task we're doing to go help a member. He was out there and comes in the meat room to have us help. It makes zero sense.

With the whole karate belt certification thing, I believe meat leads were given a deadline to learn how to cut. Also, bakery leads are required to be able to bake and decorate cakes
