Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I’m still working from home. Is that a good or a bad sign?

I'm a WFH employee not living near a collaboration zone. I haven't been called to report in when that process was taking place, on the contrary, my manager told me to continue working in the same way. I figured I was safe, but now that I see that a majority of remote workers were hit, I’m getting a little worried. I haven’t been laid off yet, I continue working, as usual, I even got some extra work, for me to this point it has been business as usual. Does that mean I’m safe for now, or do I need to be worried?

Good for you. I would do the same thing except I have about 10 times that long to go. 3 years of dodging layoffs seems impossible at this point..

To original poster, I agree with most others. Prepare for a surplus notice sooner rather than later so you aren’t caught by surprise.

ATO Techdev org. Work in a state with no Engagement (used to be called collaboration) zone, or satellite or hub city. Boss announced today if you are in a zone\Sat\Hub you are expected t be in an office twice a week. If not in Z\S\H location, don't bother going to an office. They are only pulling badge swipe reports from the Z\S\H locations. 114 days until I meet MR75. Taking the lump and retiring.

You should be concerned if you are not in a CZ. If you can take the terrible morale, keep getting paid until it’s your time.

Also, from what I have heard from those hit this round, IF you can re-apply for ‘your job’ in a CZ, the company is not paying relocation. That’s out of your own pocket, so keep that in mind. I’m sure there are probably some positions that are exceptions, but I haven’t heard of any for L2 ATO.

@jdm- You are 100% correct. I am an L2 manager reporting to a L2 Area Manager. I happen to like and trust this person. And I know they have the same insight as to what's coming that I do. Which is to say, none.

A. What your immediate manager says is irrelevant with respect to a future lay off - they will have no choice.

B. What anyone above the chain of command tells you concerning a future lay off is irrelevant because either they do not honestly know or they cannot say anything due to signed agreements.

C. Anyone out of a CZ, particularly ATO, still employed is playing with house money.

You should discuss your concerns with your manager and/or continue to wfh until otherwise notified.

I recieved an email from my AVP, to report to work 4x a week even if you are a TW. However, there is a form that you can fill out where if approved you can work from home. That is the direction we recieved. I am in ATO. I assume that will be happening through out the company. The problem is that this policy is beginning to backfire. Due to the fact that more people are coming to the office, there is no space to sit unless you arrive at 7 am and grab a place quickly. Not sure how this new policy will work.

All this "team" talk is cute. You're not on a team.

You work, T pays.

Keep buying into the CZ, team and collaborating company speak.

Keep getting your Six Sigma belts, Nano degrees, Badges and all the other BS to distract you.

You are nothing but an expense.

Smile, wave, fly low, cash the checks, try to run them out of $$$$ and keep your resume updated.

It looks like the blood is already spilled for this round, but April is coming, and TW status seems to be targeted.

Not sure if they'll have the cojones to can TW with medical authorization (one good lawsuit could take out the financial benefit to them), but they've managed to keep the extent of the damage quiet this time around, so probably no one is safe, regardless of merit, unless you're already inside a CZ, and even that just reduces the probability of getting hit, but does not eliminate it.

T is just going to be even s---ier to work for or to be a customer of going forward. The Big Bosses are starstruck media moguls now, with no time for the "boring" transport part of the business.

If you have other options, it would probably be a good idea to exercise them regardless of your current status/location.

I know an entire department that have FTO status and work from home. You'll never see their faces here maybe once or twice a month. Im FOW and we're supposed to report to the office 2x a week.

If you are employed by T you need to worry regardless of which org you are in, if you WFH or are near a CZ. When the time comes you will be surplussed...it has been a cut throat environment at T.

Last post should have said paid the least amount on our team.

Authorized full time, and was told I was cut this time due to that. My co-worker is the least Paul’s on the team, and the only other full time. She will be cut next. We also lost people that go in once or twice a week.

Here's a suggestion from 20 years doing craft work which will also apply to management and work in other companies:

Remote work rank and file employees are expendable. Keep your resume up to date and minimize personal debt. From the craft side, they've consolidated positions (remote testing and surveillance, dispatch, etc) into a few work centers in the US. Be prepared for relocation if the company is willing to move you.

They’re probably planning something and don’t want you to worry you until the cuts come. It won’t be up your immediate manager anyway. I’d be worried.

Don't know why your manager would want to take any action against you. They know they can't replace you and when they lose a report, they lose clout. Only scumbag upper management who'd run over their own mother and laugh to get a promotion are interested in slashing people from the payroll. I bet there are lots of low level management that are going to protect their direct reports in an effort to save themselves. But of course upper management probably troll info on their reports to see who they can fire for entertainment.

Same situation. I am a FOW in a state with no collaboration zone or other team members. 25% of my AVPs team are in the same situation. I've only been into an office 3 times in the last 2 years. My manager told me we are safe and that theres no reason to change my arrangement.

If location is the main factor and your not reporting to a collaboration zone I dont think it matters how often you go in if at all.

Same boat as you...full time WFH with approval. No direction on future given, just rumors and speculation on this board. Outside of a CZ, just hoping to hear from the leadership on the new rules of the game. I would even move if given the chance....and I know that is a big IF!

Are you in the ATO org? If so, I would be at least ‘concerned’ and begin earnestly updating your resume, looking at job requirements for outside jobs, upskilling, and taking time to consider if you would be willing to move if needed.
