AT&T's 2019 challenge: Reversing a shrinking TV audience and paying down billions in debt

https://www.dallasnews.com/business/att/2019/01/30/atts-2019-challenge-reversing-shrinking-tv-audience-paying-billions-debt

At the time, Stephenson said tax reform would allow AT&T to invest $1 billion more in its business and create thousands of new jobs. “Research indicates that every $1 billion in telecom capital investment in the United States creates about 7,000 more good-paying U.S. jobs,” he wrote in the company’s annual report in 2017.

....But AT&T officials have since said that refers to new work in the broader economy, such as companies that dig up streets to lay fiber.

@1diq but that's only because if they stopped the dividend it would be because of financial issues. You'd be selling because of the financial issues, not the dividend. The dividend is only there to attract investors who want to generate income. Otherwise, why would you want a dividend because it's not tax efficient. If you are reinvesting the dividends in AT&T, it's basically the same thing as not getting a dividend. The math works out the same difference, except getting the dividend is worse in a taxable account.

If AT&T stopped the dividend I would sell it the same day. It is the only reason to invest in AT&T. I bought most of mine in high 20s and very low 30s. I think all investor institutions would sell the same day as well.

The problem with stopping the dividends, a mass exodus would overtake the T stock and then it’s South Bound & Down. Anyone who buys the stock knows it’s not for growth (though it would be a bonus) it’s for the 6%+ dividend.

You want to sign a death warrant for the company, try paying off the debt when the stock goes to $20. Profits, stock price integrity and cash flow walk in lock step....Google & Apple can do what they do because they have little or NO debt.

If you were going to choose between buying a stock like T, that paid a 0% div. or a Treasury....need I ask for the answer?

T needs to start selling off parts of the business That’s the only way. We aren’t going to “revenue” our way out of this debt. Especially not when DTV is bleeding subs.

  1. Stop dividends until TW has been payed. There is a reason why those considered competitors APPLE & GOOGLE don't do it. Use that 65% or profits instead to pay down debt. Instead reinvest that in the company by paying down debt and then the business to drive stock value up. Clearly Dividends are a short term way to capitalize but it won't help in the long run look at its price now.

  2. Make a true TV to TVnow transformation in which it behaves exactly like a tv remote switching channels without 4-5 clicks each time you want to change a channel.

  3. Create tetris like packages in which the customer can have what they want or create many more packages instead of having such a limited options in directvNOW, similar to SLING

  4. Price it competitively, make it competitive with the NETFLIXES & stop overpricing new services. Think of quantity instead of profits per sale. Think of Amazon and how everything is priced for market penetration and dominance, and then adding layered options on top of it, To further drive revenue up.

Curious here. I understand wanting to do things on the cheap, but when is the last time who actually does the work was asked how we could do it better, faster, flawlessly? This is a fatal flaw with ATT top down management style...someone passes the Info down to the next level and this continues to move down until it gets to the worker bee level. At a minimum, info should flow both ways. Then they wonder why collaboration is a joke...they dont even have a way for cool ideas/sh-- to get to leadersip.

  1. There is no way to reverse the shrinking TV audience. The only way they can pay down the debt they incurred paying dearly to buy into a business they know nothing about is by cannibalizing the core AT&T business,

  2. Why would anybody ever believe anything a dolt like Randall Stephenson said about job creation?
