Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Will this change anything?

Okay, realistically, AT&T is not doing well right now. Something had to be done about it. Out of all the available options, they chose restructuring with major cuts.

So my question is, does anybody actually think this will help? That this will stop the exodus of customers? Improve our long-term results?

Or does this seem more like a shot-term solution that will leave us with all the same issues we had before, once the dust has settled?

Major corporations are also subject to the whims of banking and investment industry which try to steer/influence the company leadership. How many mutual funds have tons of T stock? But aside from that, "T" has been a dog since the SBC merger where they purchased the Midwest RBOC Ameritech in Oct, 1999. It peaked at a high of $59/s. From March of '03, it's gone nowhere as it's trading range has been between $23/s and what it is today of like $29. Maybe this is the big change they think will do something to the stock, or, the company will end up like Sears.

Agree with @XptjwER-tti - there is no respect for experience. Leadership doesn't care - they will use offshore contractors for as much work as they can. Quality be damned - all they care about is $. They certainly don't care about their employees or customers one damn bit. I only hope karma exists and those at the top get what they deserve one day - IN SDAPES - for all the employees lives they've impacted with their inability to run this company.

From a core competency standpoint, what does AT&T do really well? What does AT&T do better than its peers? What do AT&T customers say about the company? What to employees say about the company?

@sij NO ONE should have to clean a shared work area because the last person sitting there was a

slob. People should be respectful of others and clean up after themselves! And if you think collaboration equates to productivity, you're drunk on that Dallas kool aid.

T is toast.

@dlt If you're "very unproductive" I guess that's a valid reason for layoffs. Also, maybe try cleaning up around the place if it's dirty. Ironic to complain about not wanting to lose a job, while being angry if they even dare ask you to show up to work. It sounds like they must be paying you about $7.25 an hour, considering how angry you are.

Increasing shareowner value? Have you looked at a chart of T?

This stock hasn't closed above $40 in almost 2 years and recently hit lows not seen since 2011.

AT&T is executing on a plan laid out years ago to automate as much as possible, and reduce the number of people by 1/3 by the year 2020. They still seem to be able to pour in the cash to run the business, and pay the shareholders while increasing shareowner value.

Too late. The environment is toxic, people are angry, frustrated and constantly worrying about keeping a job. Add the stress of making people commute coupled with a noisy, dirty work environment makes for a very unproductive person. All those Dallas dimwits care about is that your butt is in a seat, you're not using VPN, you are swiping your badge. ATO had folks take intensive SAFe training and so far no one has used it. The only "collaboration" these days is despair & disgust. There is no leadership from above, they are so far removed from reality it's ridiculous.

The 4th floor in Dallas thinks they are smarter than anybody. Instead of focusing on core competencies, they make desperate (appear desperate) moves to try to "buy" growth. Honestly, they just aren't very good. Their egos completely blind them.

ATT and every other major telcom has been laying off for years. Back in the 90s there was a mass exodus of top talent with a major buyout and layoff. The company survived. It will continue to survive.

“Leadership” and many other cronies think any job/skill can be trained into someone even if it took years of seasoned experience and 1000s of events for a person to have built that expertise. Replacing highly skilled folks lost to the layoffs is not a worry for them, just have the replacement take a few LSOs, a nano degree and get a few tspace badges and they are set right?! Whatever!

This is actually creating more problems. The knowledge loss and expertise cannot easily be replaced.

AT&T has a lot more growing pains on the horizon. They are trying to automate products where they have people with no expertise trying to lead the way. Truly sad.

Short term fix that will lead to long term problems. AT&T is on the same path as GE and Sears if there is not a significant change in leadership and direction.
