Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Moffetts's take:

Moffett doubts if even this will be enough to right the AT&T ship. He believes that while AT&T might make its 2019 financial targets, it could be “at the cost of an even uglier 2020.”

“Interestingly, most of the most aggressive strategies, like trying to keep key content from Time Warner exclusive for the benefit of either DirecTV or their wireless business, would actually hurt near term results,” Moffett said.

When contacted by Motherboard for comment, AT&T would only say that the company has been clear about its plan to eliminate promotions and pay down debt, noting the company has paid down $9 billion in debt since the Time Warner deal closed. It was also quick to insist its current streaming pricing is well in line with comparable services like Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV.

But as Motherboard has exclusively reported, some of this debt is being eliminated courtesy of looming layoffs, despite AT&T receiving tens of billions in tax cuts and regulatory favors from the Trump administration. Many AT&T customers are particularly annoyed by the company’s assault on net neutrality, a move also likely to drive up consumer costs.

Hammering already frustrated customers with yet more price hikes—to pay for mergers nobody wanted—isn’t likely to improve AT&T’s image anytime soon.

Craig Moffett is a T-Mobile slappy that is heavily invested in T- Mo. So take whatever he and his mouthpiece, Fierce Wireless, with a grain of salt.

Promotions, as in free HBO with Unlimited Plus cell service. Or BOGO iPhone. Not employee promotions...

I dare att to raise my rate. I half way out the door right now if my rate goes up I will move to other companies. I know so many friends I helped to give att business and left because they raised their rates. Keep it up att and you will have zero business. I wish I could get my land line through some other company but they have a MONOPOLY on that in my neck of the woods.

Remember the good old days when they were broken up and we had maybe one or two other choices. What a racket.

I promise I will right the sinking DTV Now ship. We will go back to giving away Roku and Apple TV to get millions of money losing customers on the books for 3 months just in time for the next quarterly report. When they flee, we will blame seasonal disconnect or content other than Turner & HBO is not worth watching.

Right? Net neutrality means I don't have to buy wifi twice from the same company. If you sell me wifi for my phone, it should be wifi for my home too. AT&T needs to stop double dipping to rip us off!

We all know what net neutrality is. It's the thing that means when you sell me an unlimited phone you can't start throttling it just because you think I used too much unlimited data. It also means you don't get to limit my video quality and turn off my Hotspot.

Your unlimited plan is like if I sold you unlimited gas, but after the first 22 gallons you could only pump half a gallon per day. On the highway your speed would be limited to 65 mph. And towing anything would require an upgrade to unlimited+, which gives you 5 gallons of fuel for towing.

What you are doing with these fake unlimited plans is horrible and speaks volumes to your lack of ethics. If you came up with that idea or are involved in selling that fraud , you deserve to be layoff.

"One should note that AT&T has already reduced debt levels by $9 billion to ~$171 billion since closing the merger. The goal is to reduce the debt in 2019 to ~$158 billion via cash flow generation and up to another $8 billion via asset sales."

Since I am still employed as of this moment, I am especially interested in this "$8B in Asset Sales". Upper Management may go completely ape-$hit with Legacy Asset divestitures and sales IF they can find an interested buyer.

You know at this point, their desire to sell of the legacy part of the business is without question or debate. The question now is how badly do they want to get rid of it. Years ago, these assets would have fetched a decent price. At&t has waited so long, they will probably have to PAY some company to take it over and pay them a stipend for 5-years before being completely rid of it.

What I am saying is that the bean-counters will be making up a lot of these cost-saving numbers in Excel in order to meet their debt level reduction targets. Our accountants will be converting future cost savings into Free Cash Flow. IMO, 2019 will be very hurtful and surprising to everybody. 2020, on the other hand will get down-right crazy.

Let's face it. We all work for a communications company who doesn't want to be in the telephone business. Go figure.

Maybe you had me until the "AT&T customers are particularly annoyed by the company’s assault on net neutrality." Like any customers know what a net neutrality is.

Ran-dolt, you need to go. You have destroyed what used to be a rock solid 'widow's and orphan's stock.' Your management stinks and you have no clue what you're doing. Leave now.

Its time for Randolph to retire. He caused all these issues with thd botched TMobile deal, then soiral dowward with more bad mergers. Hes ridiculous.

The layoffs are not even a drop in the bucket at the overall problem. T needs to start selling off parts of the biz.
