Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

ATO-The Next Round

So, will the next round of ATO layoffs be based solely on location like the most recent one? Is that the only decision maker again? Sux!

It may be done differently now, but about 10 years ago, I was collared by the local Building Manager, because I happened to be working in the middle of the night, and asked to help out, because the computer that processed the badge swipes had filled up, so some of the swipe files needed to be backed off and deleted.

These files were just for the one local building, and had never needed even to be looked at before.

I seriously doubt that upper management intends to spend the time on each of us to determine the number of badge swipes, tho they probably do track telecommute access times, as the Cisco software makes that easy.

Most likely, they just dump Webphones into a spreadsheet and ax us based on that.

"Next round will be based on location AND office status - TW,FOW. They will be checking how often you are in the office via vpn and door badge swipes to see if you have been ‘collaborating’." Isn't upper Management aware of how many people have bogus information in webphone?? Come on...there are people with FTO doing VO living in the mid-west with a Dallas location in webphone….People gotta do what they gotta do to survive I guess.....I am not blaming them but it is really ridiculous.....and not fair to folks who obey COBC

I wrote the previous post and said it'sh--ting older employees harder. I guess we can't trust this editor. Keep it classy, guys.

I can tell you this: I completed a lot of certifications and specializations in PLE, and gave up a significant share of my personal time to do so because I believed leadership when they said this could make a difference when surplus occurred. Silly me. I have also worked FTO since day one with the company and keystrokes have never been an issue for me. My ratings were very good as well.

I was laid off this week. It's all about $$, not our performance, and it'sh--ting older employees harder. I personally know a lot of solid performers that were caught up in this layoff which makes it all the more heartbreaking. More than anything, I will miss all of you. Please take care of yourselves. This could have been done so much better. Sad to say, AT&T is not the company I thought I knew.

@vez: It was well socialized last year within my organization deep within ATO that leadership was absolutely viewing badge swipes to determine building utilization and was withholding building and equipment repairs at several locations until attendence picked up to justify it. This included buildings within CZs and the information came directly from our building's representative.

Managers cannot see access card information. Only asset protection, and they would need a reason to investigate.

I do not think it is as easily determined in the VPN vs. badge swipe case. For instance, I log in remotely every day and night and go into the office for my shift. Sometimes it requires an immediate response that just cannot be done with the company cell phone. My boss knows this. I would tend to think that if an employee being looked at closely has low VPN hours and had badge swipes can exist even if they VPN in everyday.

For instance, some with part time telecommute allowance can be expected to be on VPN 8-10/day for each day they are allowed to work remotely. I think it is more danger for someone with 40 hours/week on VPN that they look at the badge swipes.

@dlx, from what I heard some VPs did it by location and some took input from managers.

Badge swipes and low VPN mean jack $hit, just because someone is in an office it doesn't mean they are working hard. It's social hour 8 hours a day.

@wil: None were TW. About 70% were FOW. The remaining 30% were FTO.

@dlx but where the ones in Collaboration Zones TW or FOW?

Finance will just tell the VP's what percentage to cut, and they make determination of criteria. I would think a variety of factors will be used to select who goes and who stays. Ya know they do look at who's completed Pivot skills training and those with Nano's and have played the training game.

Why do people keep repeating that the last round was based solely on location? It's simply not true.

I know management employees who were notified across many different organizations and locations, several in Collaboration Zones.

Hopefully they draw names out of a hat instead of basing layoffs on skills, work ethic, experience, etc.. it's just as discriminatory to lay someone off based on their lack of enthusiasm for their job as it is for their race. After all, laziness is a disability, not a choice.

Upper management is laying off great employees and continues to use contractors for three to four times the cost. AT&T outsources all of the cell site builds that are marked up three to five times. Poor leadership financially.
