Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Voluntary vs. Involuntary

Any idea if followup layoffs this year will have Voluntary offers first? I realize that AT&T is age discriminating this time, but wonder if our leadership will wake up and do the right thing next time and have voluntary offers just before involuntary offers. This is really disgusting to me that AT&T did the wrong thing. There will always be folks who are ready to retire and will volunteer to get the 6 month severance if given the chance. Not having a voluntary offer is very unfair to both the person who wants to retire and won't (because they want the 6 month severance) and to the person who wants to remain employed and gets laid off. AT&T is basically laying off someone who wants and needs their job while someone else would have gladly taken their place. I am not sure how prevalent this is but I bet there are at least hundreds of cases where someone getting laid off now could have remained employed so that someone who wants to retire now could have done so.

@1eny Except, you didn't prove anything. You're still speculating. I didn't see any facts, data, or sources provided by you. Even if your generalization is correct, it's not the legal definition of age discrimination. The conversation is pointless anyway, since they are obviously trying to reduce payroll costs. It's no secret.

@1stv age/years on previous post. If you were surplussed on 1/28/19, can you comment with your age below?

@sye This is easily proven to be age discrimination. All of the new hires and younger folks are concentrated in Collaboration Zones. In non Collaboration Zones, you won't find any of the new hires, and instead an older work force by comparison. So the average age by concentrating on cuts in non Collaboration Zones is significantly higher, as is the average salary, average medical costs. Add to that the older workers typically have pensions and the younger ones do not, it is easy to see why the company conveniently used "location" as a way to age discriminate.

How do you know, "AT&T is age discriminating this time" They well documented they used location as the criteria. Most the company is over 40, so your anecdotal information is worthless.

For those retirement eligible that want to leave and won't due to waiting for severance. No volunteer offer like last year. Think about it, what you lose in interest hike on lump sum is worth more than your severance. Those retirement eligible should really consider retiring by end of March. I double checked the numbers and the way to go for me. I am retiring, no more stress and enjoy the rest of my life. Hope this helps.

@cgs - both involuntary and voluntary qualify for severance. This post has nothing to do with that.

The offer for 2019 is the lump sum interest rate hold over.

@cgs The Management and bargained for severance plans are still in place, Are you mistaking that with a voluntary offer? Or do you just generally not know what you're talking about?

Agree. This is their table and they will choose who gets dealt the cards.
