Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Boeing did the same thing to get rid of older people

As usual T is just copying what another company did. Boeing IT workers belonged to an association called SPEEA but the corporate strategy is the same.

"then it created the need for layoffs by announcing plans to move jobs — but not necessarily employees — to non-union shops out of metro Puget Sound"

I'm today's regulatory environment age discrimination is very hard to prove. Just last week 7th circuit ruled against a lawyer who filed age discrimination. Bottom line is corporate America values bottom line above all else, highly paid senior employees are considered a liability for the balance sheet.

Randall probably learned how to do this when he was on board of directors for Boeing

@fkc, you are absolutely right and we should consider lucky to survive that long at one place and it won’t be easy for new generations.

This is status quo for American workers in 2020, get used to it. Most millennials I know are smart about this know any job is just an arrangement and not to put touch much faith in their employer.

Folks.that have been here 15-20+ years consider yourselves lucky and you got a decent career out of this place. I suspect in 20years very few folks will be in the same position.

Corporate America is going away from long term employees to contractors to a "gig" employment economy for knowledge workers at least until AI replaces most positions..this is the coming reality of white collar work in America.
