Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

If you get cut, how to "work" remaining weeks

Presuming you get cut , what's the proper way to finish out the position?

I presume your manager will make arrangements for knowledge transfer, and hand off of your projects , what are your responsibility to the projects once you know you will be leaving?

Once upon a time a company by the name of SBC approached AT&T saying, "We want your branding, everyone recognizes the symbol you display, the quality of your service and the products you sell. We want it all....and we want it now."

That was about ‘05-‘06....we were merged, perhaps consumed is a better word." You could make the argument that this was the moment we ceased to be AT&T or move it forward to ‘07 when Randy came to town and he became CEO of AT&T....it was "The Day The Music Died."

Many of us we hired before the merge, others later, but I would ask that you go out as you came in...as professionals and do your jobs. SBC made T into their own private Frankenstein monster and, sorry to say, we are the collateral damage...good luck

First thing to realize is that your 1st Line Supervisor or 2nd Line AM was just as blind-sided as you were. And they know full well that the fewer Indians there are, the fewer Chiefs there will be. I say this so you don't go ballistic on people who are as powerless as you feel.

So, you've been told you are on the sh--can list. What to do?

Job number 1- find another job.

While you still have company paid Internet access, start cranking out resumes and linking to every job site you can Google. While you still have access to Vendors, call all of those Nortel and Fujitsu and Cisco sales reps and let them know you are freeing up in 8 weeks. Call your customers and your BZ Accounts - they might just love to have a liaison with former Telco contacts.

Boss asks you about the TPS report - sling some c-ap together so you can't be accused of willful negligence and fling that turd into his Inbox.

Once you have been told your date of execution, your ONLY goal is to make it out alive and move on - you owe these people nothing.

I went with "class". But then I also wanted to be selected. I didn't want my friends to have a bad opinion of me. And I'm just that way in nature. Good luck to all.

Personally, I'd post the question to my boss and let that be the answer on what I need to with the work. But make no mistake, my main job will be to find another job. Do what is necessary, keep your head down, and leave on good terms so you can get the severance package.

Going thru something like this forces you o go through many of the grieving stages. Try not to get stuck in the anger phase of grief. Do not go out makinga scene kicking and dragging your feet, Make sure you make a graceful exit and swap contact info with your peers to stay in touch. If your peers remember you fondly they may offer help in job leads for you if you desire to continue working.

@gts - I'm sorry you have to make that call tomorrow - do you have flexibility as to when to make it? Or is there a specific time leadership asked you to notify people? As much as I don't want to get a call, I sure don't want to wait all day....just wondering if it was left up to sup's.

I was surplussed in ‘94 as a tdt. T told me they have a job for me 150 miles away if I wanted to stay in the company. Hmmmmmmm... I will have to give them an answer in 48 hrs or leave the company.. I took the job and got into an accident 6 months later. Somehow they found another tdt job close to my home. The company laid off too many tdts. I retired happily 7 years ago as a comm tech in NorCal.

Be careful not to equate your direct supervisor with T senior leadership. As a manager who will be notifying folks tomorrow that they are “on the list” I can assure you that I had no part in the decision and I have no desire to lose those folks. I think most managers are in the same boat.

I was eliminated in December and in 60 day mode now. I can tell you when it happened to me (lied and said job eliminated when it really went overseas), the last thing on my mind is wanting a smooth transition. No offense to company or remainng team but when you are "cut" you are No longer part of the team.

From what I have heard, most Managers will be just as stressed about losing people and are supportive as far as allowing you to make finding another job your top priority. As others have said, be respectful, both to yourself and the rest of your team by making an effort to hand off work. Maybe don't go that extra mile for the company - use that for yourself.

Do the bare minimum until your time is up. Don't be a schmuck and go above and beyond what's required to do a clean separation. It's just a business arrangement.and since the company no longer values your work, there's no point in valuing the company, simple as that.

That doesn't mean to act like an ssole to your remaining co-workers, they are the poor souls.that have to pickup any on going work. Be.respectful, but focus on your future and put T in your rear view mirror.

Don't change anything as far as where you work because that really won't matter in a few months. Be respectful, helpful, do everything you can to leave on a high note. Ease your way out and get on with your life as best you can.

Don’t be so quick to WFH if you are surplussed tomorrow. That is a COBC and you will lose your severance benefit and unemployment if you are fired.

If you're surplussed then your new job is to find a new one (unless you're retiring). I was in this position nearly 10 years ago with AT&T. I had to train my tech mahindra replacement for uverse. I found another position in the company within the 60 day window and have been in that org till this day. If I am surplussed tomorrow, then I'm just happy I will not have to do CP19 training, LOL. I'll just start the search again internal and external. I work in IT and am good at what I do. Someone will hire me. If AT&T wants to give me an 8 month bonus to find a new job that's cool (2 months for the 60 day window and 6 months salary based on current surplus rules). Good luck to everyone tomorrow.

I'm surprised this is even a question. If you are leaving you will need to transfer your projects.

What did you think would need to happen?

Hand off your projects and complete your KT. Show up for your remaining days and leave with dignity. Don't burn your bridges!

If I get Laid Off I plan to review the paperwork they provide me in great detail. If it does not specifically state that I must train someone else on my job responsibilities then I will not. Sorry but I'm not going to cooperate. And................I'm not going into the office but will instead WFH every single day. Drop my a-- after 2 decades and expect me to play nice......gotta be SH!TTING ME.

The company has said they do not need your services don’t hope if you act a certain way they will bring you back. Do the absolute least to not be fired. The company has “world class training” why would they need you who they say they don’t need anymore to train when they have such a great system. The people in my office waiting for a JOG offere are doing 100% nothing other then coming into the office.
