Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

My Mistake Was Not Watching Outside Closer

I may or may not be surplused in Monday, but looking out at the job market now, I am finding critical and job-killing gaps in my knowledge, even for a similar position. Yes, I know it’s my fault, I was ‘too busy’ and ‘not really looking’ for another job. I would glance through both internal and external jobs lightly, without really paying attention. I kept up a few online classes and workshops, and learned AT&T specific project management processes, etc. (non-transferable knowledge). I waited for training I requested to be approved (never was), and instead of finding a way to pay and attend on my own, I let it go. Hindsight is a beast. Just some reflection and advice to anyone reading who stays safe this round- make sure you fully invest in yourself by really researching external job requirements and making sure you get the training you need. T talks a good game about available training, but I never saw it. Three/Four year old cloud video lectures on a technology we decided not to use doesn’t cut it. Good Luck.

@ktz - I honestly don't know how a Debbie Downer like yourself gets through life. "Over supply of workers and lack of jobs"...you do know that unemployment is at it's lowest in 50 years, right? There is an under supply of workers. OP- I hope you make it through. If not I am sure you have more transferrable skills than you realize. Network. Reach out to other peers/ colleagues/ former Bosses that left the company, talk to them about what they're doing now and get advice from them. Beef up that LinkedIn profile. You're going to be OK.

The technology has progressed faster than most of us can keep up with. Age/family permitting, we are almost better off to go and retrain full-time and get rehired than try to work full-time and learn as you go especially if you are pivoting.

Yes, you are all screwed, because why hire someone that is not right out of college with the latest IT knowledge? Unfortunately, the cost of college these days doesn't make sense, you keep paying more to stay current while your chances of being employed for any length of time drop!

The whole system is out of wack. Over supply of workers and lack of jobs means that your value is low and getting lower.
